Lidoderm - Can the patch be used more than 12 hours at a time. What about continuous?

Elderly lady has people coming in to apply patch but but not always around 12 hrs later. Plus... patient wants to use it continuously.

I have had my first patch on for about 56 hours now and have not noticed a change in my pain. How long does it usually take to start working and also does water effect it at all. My doctor just put me on the 5mcg/hour patch.
