I have only been taking lithium for one week. 300mg carbonate er. I got my blood drawn to see what my levels are but won't get the results until next Monday. I am just so depressed and desperately need relief. Everyone in the psychiatric industry is so unreachable. Just not available to answer questions. If you don't think of the question when you're in the office, it just seems your out of luck until your next appointment. I have to say, this really isn't right. Anyway, I am curious how long I should expect to wait to get some result from lithium. Is it solely dependent on where your blood levels are at? I am completely dependent on others information. It seems most people get effects quickly. Am I being too impatient? What should my expectations be with lithium? I have beenin a state of severe depression for a year now. I'm so sick of being at psychiatrists mercy while simultaneously knowing they really don't care. Any information or enc would be appreciated.

Hi, William!
"t takes about 1 to 3 weeks for lithium to show the effects and remission of symptoms. Many patients show only a partial reduction of symptoms, and some may be nonresponders. In cases where the patient does not display an adequate response, consider monitoring plasma levels, and titrating the dose.
Lithium doesn't work immediately and finding the ideal dosage depends on every individual's response to the medication. Your blood levels will be monitored frequently to determine if your level is in the effective range without being too high. You're doctor wisely started you on a fairly low dosage which can be increased to over1000mg/day if needed.
It sounds like you're having a problem with communication with your doctor. Is he a psychiatrist?
If not you need a 2nd opinion or a referral to a psychiatrist. Believe me the majority of doctors are very good at patient relationships... I've been with mine for over 20 years and I can say that she truly does care about her patients. I trust her knowledge and professionality.
Lithium is a tricky (but excellent as a mood stabilizer) medication and you need a doctor who communicates well with you.
Best regards and good luck to you!
