Been on Prozac 20 mg. First two weeks were OK. The last week was terrible, flat, anxiety?

It’s not unusual to feel worse before you feel better on antidepressants. It would be wonderful if they worked immediately but sadly that’s not the case. It can take 6-8 weeks before they work. Some people feel the benefits earlier than that but for others it can definitely take time.
I personally felt worse at the two week mark than I did before starting treatment! But thankfully things got better from there. I also had a hiccup around six weeks for a few days but once again that passed and I felt better once again.
If you can read the positive reviews here and trust in the process. Give it time and try to relax.
Speak to your doctor and see what they suggest. I personally would hang in there because like I said, they take time to work. If by week six you are still not feeling better then it may be time to increase your dose, but obviously that is between you and your doctor,.
Good luck!

Thanks catholicmom. Has it worked for you ? Are you still on the Prozac? The anxiety has been terrible and I’m scared that I will stay like this.
I’m seeing my doctor tomorrow but I’m scared. Will this anxiety pass ?
Prior to this I was on Zoloft for 20 years and led a pretty normal and happy life then about 3 months ago it stopped working for some reason. I’m hoping the Prozac gives me another 20 years. I thank you and hope you are doing well.
Depression and anxiety is something you would not wish on anyone.

I am on Zoloft now. 14 years ago I was on Lexapro but it ‘pooped out’ on me after about five years. It isn’t uncommon, most people become tolerant to their meds at some stage. You were very lucky to have 20 years and I’m sure once your new meds kick in it will be the same.
I’ve heard that there is a test they can do to determine what medication would work best for you. My daughter had it done and was put on Zoloft after a bad experience with another medication. I’m not sure how accurate it is though! Although in saying that she sailed through easily on the Zoloft.
I had a few rough weeks on Zoloft but thankfully now I am feeling much better. And yes, anxiety is a cruel illness but thank God for modern medicine.
Let me know how you go. I wish you all the best.

Hello again just saw my doctor again and after 3 weeks he increased the Prozac from 20 mil to 40 mil.
He is a GP and the second of the two that I normally see for depression and anxiety.
He said Prozac is a very old drug and he would not have recommended it.
I did a lot of reading of reviews and it came up very good. So I told the doctor I wanted to try it because of its energising effect. First two weeks were good the last week was awful with terrible anxiety.
Now he has me all confused.
I have increased to 40 mil but now I’m thinking maybe I should be on Lexapro or cymbalta.
As mentioned earlier I was on Zoloft for 20 years and it worked well but then stopped working.

He also said that no doctors really prescribe Prozac anymore. It’s either Zoloft , lexapro or Cymbalta.

Would appreciate any feedback!
Do I stick it out on the 40 mil for another month or so or do I look to change to another ??

Prozac is one of the older SSRI medications but a lot of people do really well on it.
My daughter found the energising factor uncomfortable so switched medication but for many it is a life saver.
I am not a doctor but from my experience it is important to wait at least 4-6 weeks before making any dose changes. Side effects such as increased anxiety are common in the early weeks. If I had gone back to my doctor at the three week mark I’m pretty sure she would have increased my dose based on my symptom at the time!
I personally wouldn’t change medication just yet as you have not reached the stage where the medication is working optimally. Obviously that decision is between you and your doctor. At week 6-8 you will have a clearer perspective.
Let us know how you go.

Hi Catholicmom , just wondering after 3 and a half weeks of usage of Prozac is it normal to feel good for one day. Get my hopes up that the depression is clearing and then the next day I feel like crap again.
One day is good next day is bad. So so frustrating and it’s nearly been 4 weeks.

Thanks

It’s hard to say. Have you been on medication before or is this your first time?
The information states that antidepressants can take 6-8 weeks to work. Some people suggest a longer time frame. That was certainly my experience a few years ago whilst on lexapro. This time around I noticed improvements around the four week mark ( I’m on Zoloft)

I would still give it time but make sure you let your doctor know how you are feeling. From my experience I went from feeling pretty awful at 2.5 weeks to waking up at 3.5 weeks feeling as though a cloud had lifted. It amazed me how quickly things turned around.

It is still early days and I wouldn’t be too worried just yet. And if you still don’t feel better in a few weeks it might just be a case of your doctor increasing your dose. The fact that you have experience some good days is a positive thing.

Apologies for not checking before answering.

How are you feeling now?

Good morning !
Thank you for your concern.
I’m feeling still pretty much the same maybe a touch better but still not where I want to be. Still have that foggy empty feeling around my heart and very hard to stop worrying if the Prozac will work.
I have my two young kids this weekend and I’m trying to do as best as I can , without them noticing.

Fingers crossed but it’s dam hard.
I hope you are doing ok.

Thanks so much for your thoughts and concern.

Hi Catholicmom just to let you know starting to feel better. Less morning anxiety and a little more clarity.
I only hope the longer I take the fluoxetine the better I will feel. The last 4 days have been better. Just past the 4 week mark. Fingers crossed it keeps improving.
Hope you are well.

That is the best news! I am so happy to hear it. From my experience once you start to feel better it is a gradual flow from there. I started to feel like that around week 4. Exercise, a healthy diet and social life all contribute to feeling better and the antidepressant gives us the foundation to work on.
You are doing great, well done

Good morning Catholicmom ,
Hope you are well.
Question ? Starting to feel better.
2 good days and then 2 not so good days. Not as bad as 3 weeks ago. But still a little flat!
Will these good days get better? And become more frequent with the passing of time?
Still no where near where I want to be but I have improved. This has now clicked over 5 weeks and I am only about 60% but I am hoping I keep improving. Prozac 40mg.

Thanks and take care !

My doctor always tells me ‘ these are not happy pills, they are a great foundation but you have to do some work to help yourself’ It is so true. It reminds me of a trapeze artist doing their intricate moves high above the ground, but if they should fall there is a safety net to catch them. Antidepressants are our safety net. We still have bad days but they are nowhere near as bad as they were before medication. It is important to learn how to manage the bad days better, self help, self care. I try to do a twenty minute guided meditation each day, I listen to lots of self help books on Audible and I watch some Eckhart Tolle video on YouTube. All of those things before meds didn’t help me but now with their help I am better able to absorb the information and feel well enough to put in some effort. It would be great if we could float on a cloud of serenity forever but life is not like that.

I’m sure you will continue to feel better and stronger with each day.
