I have been on Adderall since 2000 when I was diagnosed with severe chronic fatigue disorder. Shortly thereafter I developed spinal stenosis and required pain meds. My family doctor is a great guy but he will not increase my Adderall from 40mg. The medication once saved my life but now i live in an exhausted haze. Can you give me some help? Thanks!
Sincerely,
Steve
How do I prove to my doctor that my Adderall dose can be increased to 60mg?

Hi Steve, maybe you could make a deal with your dr. Alot of time with any meds sometimes when your in a slump where you think you need more or stronger when you really need less. I have been on heavy pain meds for years and at first I was taking what the bottle said to do and at first they worked fine then they started not working. A friend told me to bring down the dose so instead of 3 a day I weened to just 1 in the am then used my Motrin and my break thru pain meds. It works! When your body adjusts the less works better. I know your in pain and think im nuts but I have gone thru so much I hate for the meds to rule my day. Try less and talk to your dr. Tell him that your trying using less to see if you really do need a stronger script. Make sure your dr is involved with what you should try and if he is a good guy like you say then im sure he will work with you! Its your pain you want to control not a habit! Good luck I hope you understand this. Nanimal
Daer nanimal - What a wonderful idea. Our bodies adjust, eventually to what we do on a regular basis. Your advice sounds so good, that starting tomorrow, I am going to take 1 less dose of pain med for a while and see if i really miss it. Wouldn't it be great if we could get along with less. My pain doc would be shocked if I went to him and said "Have been taking a little less for a month, and NO worse". Since this has been a rough week for me, it is perfect time to try just one less dose of break tru pain meds. I am allowed up to 8mls a day. Usually take 2 mls (40mgs) 4 times a day, but will try dropping just 1 ml once a day for a while, then another if no difference. Thanks for the great idea
Perhaps try a different medication. I found Nuvigil to help quite a bit. There is also Provigil if your insurance doesn't want to pay for Nuvigil. Before Nuvigil I used Vyvanse, and when it wasn't enough we added Intuniv. You may have tried all of these, I don't know - so I thought it wouldn't hurt to mention them to you. I especially recommend the Nuvigil. Regards - ElizaJane
Its going to be pretty difficult since the literature says there is seldom a benefit to doses over 40mg.
where does it say anything beyond 40 mg is beneficial? i don't mean that in a huffy puffy way, just never read that anywhere and want to be in the know! thanks!
With Adderall XR the recommended dose is 20mg.
Only 20 mg a day for Adderall XR? That can't be right. I've been taking it since October 2011 (after taking the IR formula for a few months) and was started at 40 mg in the morning.
