Can propranolol be taken only intermittently on an as needed basis for anxiety?

I believe a previous commenter was confusing propranalol with Propofol (which is, indeed, an anesthetic).

Absolutely! I take 40 - 60mg of propranolol (per my doctor's recommendation) an hour before a singing performance only. It has changed my life. I have severe stage fright and would become nearly incapable of remembering lyrics and singing without this medication.

I was given 40mg of short acting propranolol to take before presentations or stressful social situations. Id take it an hour before I had to do my presentation and it worked fine. Unfortunately you still have the fear and the emotions but you can function properly without the heart pumping out of ur chest.

This is a beta blocker so I’m sure it can be used only as needed. It doesn’t need to build up in your system for anxiety, especially if your anxiety isn’t daily. Did your doc tell you to take it daily? Sometimes they will tell you “as needed” but your label from pharmacy may say daily because of insurance. If it helps you to take only as needed, that’s what I would do.

I thought that propranolol is used as an anesthetic when you get a surgical procedure done! Don't quite understand your question regarding this drug to be used before a stressful situation! Is this drug prescribed by your doctor... and if so, what are you using it for? There are other meds. that you can take for your problem if it is for anxiety!
