I was prescribed these to work along side of my sertraline (only been on sertraline for 3 half weeks) for panic attacks. The doctor said to take one when needed. What I would like to know is can I take it just for anxiety symptoms without having the panic attack? I know it slows the heartbeat and I am just worried about that.
Thanks
Suzy
I have been prescribed propranolol for anxiety 40mg. I am supposed to take one when needed?

Hi, Suzy!
You don't have to be having a panic attack to take your propranolol... it also helps control anxiety symptoms like sweating, heavy breathing, nausea, palpitations, trembling, and so on.
Anxiety can lead to panic so you can control it before it becomes a full blown attack.
Thanks for your reply Wildcat. Do you think that 40mg is a high dose for anxiety symptoms? I am just worried that it slows your heartbeat and can lower your blood pressure. I am probably being silly to worry but I just think perhaps I should cut the tablet in half?
I do think you can cut the tablet in half. We are all different, but for me personally a 10mg tablet works well all day. You can always take another dose, until you figure out how your body reacts.
No, 40mgs as needed (PRN) is a very low dose. It's not going to hurt your heart rate because during an anxiety attack your blood pressure soars.
If in doubt, verify your dosage with the health care provider who prescribed the medication for you.
I have been prescribed Propranolol for anxiety too. 40mg up to three times a day. I've decided against using it for the reasons you cite. Instead I've found other means of tackling panic attacks:
I eat a banana if I feel one starting (bananas are natural beta blockers. They block adrenaline from binding to beta receptors. There's stuff on the Internet about it).
I also exercise, drink green tea and chamomile tea, use ginger, use lavender oil and use alternate nostril breathing. Listening to music helps too.
I'm currently being checked out for pheochromocytoma as well. Pheochromocytoma mimics anxiety and depression symptoms and raises blood pressure.
Propranolol does work for some people, but I don't want to become dependent on it myself.
You won't if you take it as directed (as needed).
I was told by a pharmacist that once I started taking propranolol, I'd likely need to stay on it for life. That rang alarm bells.
If you're using it on a strict regular basis for cardiac disease. The drug is not habituating so I'm not at all concerned about taking it... much better and safer than having a panic attack. The last time I was at the Emergency Department my blood pressure was 582/72 because I didn't take it in time. :(
Sorry you were in that situation. I agree. propranolol can be useful.
Yes you can. For me propranolol is a lot like Xanax, it really helps slow the anxiety down. It’s great for ramping down the tension in my body. I hope this helps, good luck to you!
