Gout is a form of arthritis that causes severe joint pain and stiffness. The most common place for gout to develop is the ball of the big toe but other joints can be affected. Gout develops when uric acid builds up in your joints. Uric acid is produced naturally in the body. Normally it stays dissolved in the blood and is excreted by the kidneys as a component of urine but if anything goes wrong with these processes and uric acid levels increase then gout may result. Gout attacks may become more frequent over time.
Treatment is aimed at relieving the pain and inflammation of acute attacks and preventing the occurrence of future attacks.
To treat an acute attack (flare) your doctor will decide which medicine and dose is best for you based on your medical condition(s), other medications and side effects. The usual dose of prednisone for an acute attack is 30 to 50mg once daily, or in two divided doses until the attack begins to subside and then the dose is tapered over 7 to 10 days.
