What will happen if I used Polysporin ointment and later realized it had expired a few years ago?

You will be fine but throw away the ointment. Expiry dates are on tubes of ointments because after a length of time the ointment starts to deteriorate and manufacturers can no longer guarantee the safety and efficacy of their product.(ie. it won't work as well) You should get a new prescription from your Doctor.
