Hi timmysmom,
Sorry about your accident.
I don't feel comfortable addressing your comment about bipolar or depression.
I DO know that neuropathic pain is better treated as soon as possible to prevent it from becoming chronic.
Gabapentin is a good drug. Many people don't find it effective (me included) but we may have a mixture of different types of pain.
Spend your time now being aggressive in getting treatment. Max # of chiropractor treatments, start gabapentin and anything else recommended whether it's hot or cold packs, anti-inflammatories, etc.
The trick is to treat it before it becomes chronic ! Very important. If treatment is not working call your doctor before next appointment. Make a pest of yourself if you have to because you don't want any regrets down the road.
Take care.
I have been on Neurontin (Gabapentin) for the last four years. Nothing was working for back pain before then. Doc started me on low doses (100mg x 3 daily). It takes time to get into your system & do the job it's intended to do. Don't be in a rush to see if it's going to work. Believe me, I KNOW what PAIN is! Neck pain down my back, and then more pain & electrical lightening bolts in my back & thighs. Add fibromyalgia to the mix... Gabapentin WORKS! Though granted, after four years, I've upped the dosing to 600mg/twice daily. True, there are side affects to everything we take into our bodies. Everyone is different. It comes down to how bad is your pain, and if you want to give a go; AFTER hearing the good & bad about the medicine. I ALWAYS go to the LORD, to ask Him after I've made my decision. When I'm in tune with the spirit, the LORD will have the final answer.
I have taken Neurontin for 3 years now. And it doesn't help me with the pain 2 much, but it does take the edge off of it so I figure that's pretty worth it. But hey everybody's different. Good luck!!
I was prescribed Neurotin over a month ago... i thought it wasn't working, so i went down (without drs concent) from 600 mg 3 xs a day to 600mg 2xs a day. But finally after a month, its working great! I feel a bit of relief, and it seems to help put you in a better more positive mood.. I've never been depressed, but it seems like there is a change. I've been on every pain med. And I am taking 3 opiods with it... but it finally helped after 4.5 weeks... so @ least give it 4 to 6 weeks. Everyone is different. A lot of ppl don't give it time to work (like i have w non opiods in the past), because they are so use to opiods working quickly, so they dont give meds like this time, and tell the doctors "they just don't work".
The only side effects are a strong urinary smell, just like when you take vitamins. I need to ask my doctor about this and make sure its nothing else (when i see them this week). Please give it time... and dont give up yet. I have damaged disc: c6 c7 s1 L3 L4 L5, scoliosis, facet joint issues, a lot of arthritic pain, in addition to all of my bulging and herniated disc.
I have a lot of pain... the doctor said i would be in a wheelchair this year, but i blv neurotin will be helping to change this around... im hopefully crossing my fingers that it continues this way. Good luck to all. Don't give up! Pain can ruin lives, keep positive!
Hi, I too have several medical problems with my entire back. I think I have maybe one, or two almost normal discs. So I live with chronic pain. I am 56 years old and unfortunately have been on permanent disability since 2007. I take several meds to maintain, an extended release opioid, an opioid for breakthrough pain, Topamax (original use to treat migraines) for nerve pain, cramping of my legs and Cymbalta (original use for depression) I take it for neuropathy (severe pins & needles/electrical shock-like) sensations in my back. There are others too on an as needed basis. However, I began taking the Cymbalta as a result of trial and error of other meds to treat the neuropathy one of them being Neurontin. I started out taking a low dose, I think 300 mg/day for a week, or so. When that didn't work my pain doctor increased it to 600 mg/day and so on all the way up to 2200 mg/day that I took for a month with no success.
As they do not want you to end up having seizures, you must titrate the dose down to zero. So as somebody said, we are all different. From Neurontin I went on to Lyrica and no success with that either, but good old Cymbalta seems to do the trick and only 90 mg/day. I have been taking it for about three/four years now. Good luck to those starting Neuronton. You just may have to find the proper dose. I know two people who have found relief and one takes 1200/mg and one takes 900/mg. There you go.
I hate when they mix up meds and label them for every illness. I don't like nerve pain meds bc they can be used for a million other things. Good luck to you, but you start feeling depressed or anxious call your doc.
I have severe neck and back problems that I just had a major neck surgery for . If I was not relying on chiropractors and meds, I don't think it would have got to this degree. I have several friends that use it for headaches and it works. I dont know about chiropractors Ive had problems if you have insurance I would get a back Dr. And get MRI's.
Neurontin is a seizure drug that helps with nerve pain as an off label use. My hubby takes 1200 mg a day & he has way more wrong with him than any one I have known. It does help him cope with his pain, but doesn't take it away. I have taken it, & it doesn't help me at all. Everyone is differnet & will react differently to every med, so try it & if it doesn't help let your doctor know. As Buddy, I believe said, they start you at a low dose of about 300mg & work upwards to a level that may seem to help. Don't expect miracles, but maybe some relief. I wish you well. I will give you the link below to read about this drug... Mary

Your Dr. probably doesn't want to give you a narcotic unless they have to. I have curvature of the spine, and Neurontin works for me. I was really surprised. Were all different. If Neurontin hasn't helped in 2 weeks though, I wonder if it's the right med for you. As far as it helping with bipolar and depression, as bipolars we need all the help we can get. timmysmom11, you need to talk to your Dr.. You've had the pain long enough. God bless you, and I pray you find the right med. A dozen roses, Anna
I have had severe back pain for the last two years. My doctor has tried me on almost every pain medication there is.
Neurontin had an excellent effect on me. The only problem was I experienced extreme weight gain and it was water weight around my feet, legs, and ankles so I had to stop taking it. I was devastated because it works so well for me. I have read a lot of these posts and many people have found good relief using neurontin. If I were you I would give it a try. Good luck I hope it helps you. If you experience negative side effects like weight gain or any of the other things on the package alert make sure you tell your doctor
I know this is an old comment but just curious how large a dose caused the extreme weight gain? Were you able to scale back the dose or were you on the lowest effective dose for you?
hi timmymoms, when i took it my doc said that it worked well the other meds i was on. If you mean i have all of that i'm assuming you mean meds for those conditions?to be honest with you its gonna help with your pain. its not some opiate that is gonna kill pain totally. but with the right combo of meds it may make your pain tolerable. Most doctors start with the non narcotic first as they taught.give the meds a try the combo wont hurt you or your doctor wouldn't have prescribed them for you... pete
I just got put on Neurontin a few days ago, because my other Md I have been seeing for 11 yrs. He said he isn't going to take Medicare or the Obama plan. I was very upset. long story short he had me on methadone 160 mg a day, then for break thru pain he gave me oxycontin, at night 40mg if I wake in pain, also clonopin for stress, and a muscle relaxer. When we had to part ways, he gave me enough of all my meds, and I joined Kaiser (Boy was that a mistake) the took me off of everything and started to taper me of the methadone and gave me Neurontin and I hate it, I see double and I really feel horrible, I used to be able to walk without my cane, because the Md who did the surgery botched it, I cant stand straight I have more pain now then ever I am trying to opt out of Kaiser and see another Md who under stands that Neurontin was really made for nerve pain, I have dull aching pain all day, and I can d
feel the rod screws and pins my mom was a diabetic and lost both legs and had a lot if nerve pain that is what I think it should be used for, not a botched back surgery. and it help seizures which is good but to take away someone's pain meds is cruel and she needs to be turned in to the board of pharmacy, and the state medical board, don't have the surgery, please check out the surgeon very well before you go under the knife, any way I am going to find another good Md like I had and be treated with caring hands the Md at Kiser is not that I have been going there since Feb., of this yr. and nobody checks my pulse blood pressure, or temp.or my back she hasn't taken a goo kook at my back she just see's I am hunched over and looked very quickly and that was what, her goal was to let me be in chronic pain, and lay on the couch all day by giving me horrible neutron, good luck I am an ex medical assistant and now I am on disability and she took the little quality of life I had away, I weight 135Lbs and now because I am in so much pain. I lost 38 Lbs. and I am 5'5" no quality of life left, please people it is a horrible drug and you cant be in the sun while on it, and I used to like to lay out in my back yard now I cant, and Now I have to send my husband to the shop because I am in too much pain to lean on the shopping cart and shop my self, the lady who is thinking of back back surgery to please rethink this. I lost my job, and more or less my life I am going to get it all back by seeing another Md who wont treat me like a # but a real person in real pain also you cannot stop neutron on your own you must be weaned off slowly so you don't have a seizure,
I am suffering from neck pain,i went to see the spine specialist,
he prescribed for me,Gabapentin, and also Nortriptyline.does any one have used these medication for Neck and DISC PAIN?
thanks
i take nuerontin along with nortryptaline and it helped me emensely with my nueropathy.
I used a similar drug many years ago to help sleep elavil plus started out on Neurontin (gabapentin). I have utilized Neurontin 3 different times always needing to stop due to stomach issues or decrease feeling it helped with the nerve damage from my myelopathy (cervical cord compression damage). As a nurse, I saw many patients use it for seizures in the 1970"s and the side effects it causes. You need you liver monitored plus the gums become hypertrophied. Some people have eyes problems and tics. It can be a wonderful adjunct but does have side effect so be aware. It is used very much off label instead of just for seizures anymore. The higher doses caused me such problems I can no longer take and people I know, can no longer either. The drowsiness effects some but that I never had. My husband who had a lumbar fusion and chronic pain when alive (was an industrial roofer), slept all day on a 100 mg Neurontin. A 2400 mg dose did not even make me tired.
Look for the psychiatric alerts from 2009. Read all the side effects. Not all doctors are aware and are pushing this as if no side effects. All medications do and not everyone will have them. It really helped me until the dosage was elevated. I use Topamax. Was on it years ago but stopped due to interaction with another medication. That is working well for me. I no longer use Elavil and haven't in 15 years. That was as needed. It can cause damage to stomach nerves which I have from other medications. It is very important to know your medications and side effects. My one doctor sits 40 minutes going over all my medications and you would be surprised at how many doctors don't care about drug interactions and side effects with what you take! You have to start to take your life into your hands to better help your doctor. Best of luck!
I take 4 600mg tab's a day for one totally screwed up C-1 to C-2 vertabra fusion & one that went like it was supposed to,but between the 2 I'm in constant pain,or would be without a good doctor & a medication that works, the Gabapentin(Generic Neurontin) seem to help with no depression what so-ever. You might find some on this others that HAVE had that side-effect & that's what's nice about this site is you get a wide verity of people with some the same probs. your having, with 1000's (I'd assume?) that can help someone else. Back to the Gabapentin, the only side effect I've ever noticed & was told by my doc in high doses it does cause sedation. As long as I've been on it sorry thats all I can speak on about it besides I've never had any bad or any problems in general. Hope this helps & good luck. J
Neurontin is usually prescribed for nerve related pain and yes, it also has some other uses as well. Not sure what you mean by "i have all that and i just dont see how it all can mix together."
From the little I know about it the ceiling is fairly high so there's a lot of room for adjusting as far as the dose is concerned. I would say it's worth a try as your injuries suggest nerve related pain.
Hi timmysmom, I can trace my fibro back to really kicking in after a car accident about 25 years ago at 39 years of age. I had really bad whiplash, at that age I didn't take it very seriously. I did the chiropractor treatments and felt ok after a few months, But over time the pain came back and got progressively worse, head, neck back. I don't mean to scare you but I believe if I had to do it all over I would have taken care of the pain early on before the pain/brain chemical cycle started and threw my whole stress/brain/pain balance off. Now I am in constant pain and hope you can treat it now and eliminate further pain and suffering. My chiropractor told me that the body needs relief from pain or it sets up a vicious cycle over time. best wishes, mindy
hi, i have a neck condition (detereriated discs) and my doctor has given me gababentin. i take 1600 mil. a day and pain has lessoned. it is not addictive. ask your doctor.
You have to be weaned off it slowly or have serious side effects. As with any drug, this one too has bad side effects depending upon the dosage. When I was on a lower one, it was fine, The higher it got, the more problems. On 800 mg three times a day, no longer could I take it and am on another drug. Does do wonders for some but often related to dosage. Please read ALL the side effects. Not all doctors are aware. I gained 20 pounds, had edema, and terrible stomach cramps in one week at that dosage. My two doctors I called said no not from the medicine. My pain doctor, pharmacist, brochure, and research stated YES. This is a great site for info. Glad it helps you and hope it continues.
Dear timmysmom11,
You will hear from more people about this medicine, but yes it is prescribed for pain and can work. I took it myself for chronic lower back pain. It is prescribed for other things, but there are alot of medications that are prescribed for more than just one purpose. I know how you feel though. I thought the same thing. But it actually helped. Don't be afraid to take it, if your doctor prescribed it. Worse case scenerio it doesn't work, you can tell him and take something else. I wish the very best for you though. And hope it works for you. My best wishes to you, Ruth
Today I was just prescribed this medication for back and spinal pain. I was having mixed feelings of taking it before I read your comment. Thank you for your reasonable explanation. It makes sense and so true. Many medication are used to treat more that one condition and I will give it a try.
Thanks!
I have spinal stenosis which effects the nerve in the right leg. My doctor has gave me several pain meds. but they just took the edge off the pain. Last month my Dr. gave neurontin for my pain and he said some people it helps and some it does not. After receiving the med. I read side effects and I hesitated. I looked at bottle for several days and pain was tormenting me. I finally decided to give it a try. Well guess what it is working..no controlled substances used since I have been taking this. The only side effect that I notice after using 2 weeks is getting very sleepy if I set down but if I keep moving after a while this subsides. I hope this info helps someone. I thank the Good Lord for sending this my way. I give the Lord the credit for it all. God is good.
For Daisy2005. Take before bed. You'll sleep better too.
I'm a 51 year old man that has been diagnosed with severe spinal stenosis having small peticles basically my nerves run threw my vertebrates holes are very small causes nerves to touch and cross very painful when walking Dr. Prescribes hydro condone 10/325 two of them make it painfree for about 3-4hours but that's it! Wondering if my gabapetin 600mgs would help with my pain ?
