... I have an ileostomy and will be going through chemo again. I already know that the chemo will give me the diarrhea side effect. I worry that the capsules won't dissolve and allow the medicine to be absorbed in my body to work as they're supposed to. I have no problem taking the caplets of Tylenol when needed for pain relief though.
Loperamide - Can I twist open the capsules and put the powder in applesauce to take this medication?

Hi drama, yes you can, Loperamide is an opiate derivative made from Thebaine and is orally bioavailable. With an ileostomy I can imagine diarrhea is the last thing you need or want.
Take care and good luck.
Hi Stephen,
Thanks so much for a quick response to my question. I'll try taking it whole and see what happens. If if comes out whole in my bag, it's good to know I have another option. The last time I had chemo I also had radiation treatments which I think caused most of my diarrhea since the radiation was in the pelvic area. I definitely plan on being more proactive about managing this side effect since now I have no control over bowel movements until my ileostomy is reversed.
