I was switched from Celexa to Zoloft and they told me to do the same thing. I had no side affects, it was as if I had never even changed meds.
The others have answered your question, but the way to a smooth changeover is to decrease the lexapro while at the same time, increasing the zoloft.
While both are SSRI's the transition maybe a bit rocky if going straight from one to the other. Don't be alarmed if you have some headache, diarrhea, and what are called brain zaps while the Zoloft builds in your system and the Lexapro leaves. Everyone is different, transition won't last long and I hope Zoloft works well for you.
What your doc meant was they are in the same class of medications, not that they are the same drug, they are not! And yes, you can switch over to Zoloft without needing to taper off of Lexapro, since both meds are Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors or SSRI's, or even SNRI's.
Good luck and I do hope your anxiety is gone very soon, not pleasant to put it mildly.
