Has anyone switched from Effexor to any of these three other meds? If yes, what did you experience? How are you doing now?
I was diagnosed with GAD, but my new doctor believes OCD is really the cause most of my issues.
Thanks!!

I recently weaned off of Effexor 225 mg and have transitioned to Zoloft 100 mg. I had been on Effexor for 20 years. Recently my life has been turned upside down and the Effexor wasn't controlling my anxiety attacks. I am feeling sore and flu like, but no nausea and headaches. I am hoping I won't feel any worse side affects. It's only been 2 weeks. The transition was prescribed by my physician. It did seem rather quick. Fingers crossed.
Nothing has worked more effectively than Effexor for me! I don't know why the doctors decided to take me off it, but I'm back on it now and doing great.
BTW, I had NO discontinuation symptoms when I weaned off with a tapering dosage schedule.
Hi wildcatvet
I know your post is from a long time ago so my chance of reply are low. Just wondering if you can share the tapering dosage schedule you used to get off Effexor?
I'm currently on 75mg once daily and I really want to get off it. My doctor says to cut down by half for one week then go every second day. That is not going to work for me, if I miss one day I get massive withdrawals. I'd like to know what other people's drs have advised
Thanks
Hi, Nevada! I did get your post, but honestly I tapered off Effexor so long ago I don't really remember the schedule we used. I was taking 225mg/day so it was a very long process and we used the generic venlafaxine IR tablets for easier dosing. It went something like 200mg/day for a week, then 175mg/day for a week, etc. All in all it took a couple of months but it went very smoothly and I had no discontinuation symptoms.
I wish I hadn't had to stop it in the first place as it worked so very well for me and I had no side effects... except I had been diagnosed with MDD when in reality I am Bipolar and the antidepressant began provoking manic cycles. :-(((
If you don't mind my asking, why do you want to stop your medication?
Hi wildcat
Thanks so much for your reply.
I've just found out I'm pregnant, that's the main reason for wanting to stop. I've only been on it for roughly 6 months and prior to this I was on sertraline for 2 years. I have been doing well on the Effexor since starting although I've remained on a fairly low dose.
I have been trying to wean off it at half dose but only for the past few days, I then got sick over the weekend and missed a dose altogether. The withdrawals I had were horrendous, brain zaps, cold sweats, vivid dreams, pretty much unable to move my head! Makes me even more concerned are these the effects it's going to have on my newborn if I continue taking throughout my pregnancy?! My body doesn't handle pregnancy nicely anyway, I get bad morning sickness, all day, for the entirety and I feel the Effexor is making me feel worse now weirdly. So a couple of reasons for wanting to stop.
I'd be happy to switch back to sertraline, my doctor would be happier with me on that also, but I can't handle those withdrawals from Effexor! So I need a method that is going to limit my withdrawal symptoms
Well, congratulations! There have been very limited studies done in regards to Effexor during pregnancy and breastfeeding, but animal studies suggest the greatest risk is during the last trimester.
Perhaps even with a slightly slower taper you could avoid serious risks.
Have you consulted with both your doctor and OB/GYN on this issue?
I've been on Effexor XR for approximately 17 years. I am going to switch to Lexapro next month. I've been on Lexapro before and found it very helpful but then my doctor decided Effexor XR would be better. I don't know why I stayed on this drug so long other than the fact that I've heard horror stories about the withdrawals from it and I've tried to withdraw myself a little at a time and found myself raging horribly. When I am on Effexor XR I feel very anti-social, I have no moods whatsoever,. eg: I can't grieve, get angry, or be very happy about anything. I feel absolutely nothing! It makes me feel like staying in bed and in the house all the time. I'm hoping that this switch to Lexapro will be an easy transition and I will feel much better and more like myself again. My question is has anyone else felt like I have on Effexor XR? Thanks
I was not getting much benefit from Effexsor got up to 150 for a week and my blood pressure rose to high . I am weening off and on Lexapro 10 now and down to 37 Effexsor. Four weeks into Lexapro today, hoping it kicks in. I’ll continue to go down on Effexsor till I’m off
I want to let people know that switching from Effexor to Zoloft is not a horrible experience. Well atleast not for me. I promised myself that if I didn't get major withdrawals and crazy stuff like people post that I would try and ease others minds. I was on the lower end of Effexor so maybe that helped the transition. It's still early in the switch but I didn't experience many side effects. I don't really know if I experienced any to be honest. I was so scared after reading so many horrible stories. I cried thinking about what was ahead for me. If I can give any advice to anyone taking medication, it's to stop reading the Internet and try it for yourself and see how your body reacts to the meds.
so i went from zoloft to effexor xr . i just switched back to zoloft 3 weeks ago. since then i have be having little dizziness mor at evening time . is that normal?
I have been going through a roller coaster of feelings. I did start to experience shocks in my toes and fingers and crying spells after switching from Effexor to Zoloft. I was only on 75 mg of Effexor and now I am on my second day of Zoloft at 200 mg after increasing from 100mg and I hope this works cause Effexor is super powerful and I'm still getting anxiety but I'm hoping with time my body adjusts to Zoloft. I think if you are only experiencing dizziness you are doing fine!!! You just switched the chemicals in your body and your brain needs to re adjust!!!
thank you . yeah i hope it starts to slow down soon..
I have tried to get off Effexor XR for many years in different doses. I feel nothing, never cry etc. If I miss a pill in the AM, by noon I am foggy, dizzy, and headache. I have asked psychiatrists for changes for years but they say it works so stay on it. Well, insurance took care of this for me. I can no longer get 225 tablet and three 75 capsules just does not work. So, I am changing to Zoloft. I anticipated a struggle. Today Day 2: Had to leave work early; felt weepy but did not cry, headache, dizzy, foggy, sleepy. Came home slept hard for 3 hours. Felt somewhat better. Need to be on top of my game at work... so a bit fearful of the week. Don't want to self medicate with caffeine... you all know what I mean. I know being on such a high does of Effexor will make my experience different. I am higher than most I have read about here. On a more light note... years ago i forgot my Effexor at Christmas... on the third day while I was waiting for my Dr.
to send a script in for me... I was a mess. Went to see polar express with my family and literally wept the entire movie ... I tell you. It felt sooooo good to cry and feel it. So, hopeful to find my emotional self a bit, while keeping my depression at bay... maybe Zolft will be an answer. Ready for a change.
Hi I've been on Effexor for fourteen years and I'm thinking of switching to Zoloft because I finally need to accept that it doesn't work
I used to take Zoloft but the psychiatrist decided I would do better on Effexor.I have suffered much worse ocd from this drug and i was on 75 mg for seven years and when I had a trauma in my family I was put on 150mg..but I had worse drowsiness on this dose and after seven years more i decided to goi back on 75mg but its just crap, my mood is bland and it's not boosting my mood. I'm sick of hearing all these horror stories about effexor withdrawal, if your Dr draws up a plan for you then you will be OK.it really doesn't do any good frightening people.I liked sertraline and want to go back on it so I i would like some positive feedback please about what it may be like to switch to Zoloft oh I'm also on zyprexa.thanks bless you all.
Thank you for all of your responses. It's comforting to know that I'm not alone in this journey.
As far as an update, I've been on Fluvoxamine for 3 weeks and finally got off of Effexor last week. I experienced brain zaps and some nausea, but otherwise the ramp off Effexor wasn't as bad as I thought it was going to be.
Fluvoxamine appears to be helping. Thoughts are slower, I can concentrate, and I'm a bit more relaxed.
Thanks again everyone!
I was on Effexor 150 XR for 12 years for panic disorder / depression and did ok but could never show or feel much emotions and could never even cry or grieve when loved ones passed away. It suddenly quit working for me last Dec after a bout of the flu. My psych had me titrate down and switch over to Lexapro but the withdrawal was tortuous for 2 months with horrendous brain zaps, dizziness and nausea. I'm now doing better on just 5mg Lexapro but have to supplement with 2mg per day Ativan to control the continued panic episodes. However, I am now able to show emotions and dont feel so much like a zombie robot.
I recently switched the other way - from Lexapro to Effexor. My doctor said just to swap them out the next day, no tapering or building up. For me the changeover was a non-issue. No serious side effects, other than a slight headache the first day. Your mileage may vary. Hope the Lex works for you!
I switched from Effexor to Lexapro and found it to be most helpful. The Lexapro seems to keep me on an even keel. Effexor withdraw is risky business if not done under medical supervision.
Be well.
Thanks for the post. Did your doctor ramp you on Lexapro while tapering from Effexor, or was it a light switch?
I was very uninformed and stopped taking my Effexor. When serious withdrawl symptoms hit, I contacted my doctor (who was very unhappy with me!) He did immediately ramp me on the Lexapro... but I am down to 10mg.
Be well.
I switched from Effexor to zoloft, zoloft to effexor, and then effexor to lexapro/wellbutrin.
the swtch from effexor to zoloft was a nightmare, i felt dizz, dazed, tired, stomach cramps and tons of racing thoughts. So i went back to effexor and it never worked well for me. Never felt normal. Now my PDR switched me to lexapro but added wellbutrin and the side effects were minimal if done slowly.
How do you like Lexapro? Does it work better for you than Effexor did?

I like the lexapro less side effects than Effexor
Did you slowly taper from Effexor to Zoloft or just switch
How is lexapro with focusing and fatigue? I found Effexor very difficult to maintain motivation and brain stamina, Im just about to switch to 10mg of lexapro from 150 mg of Effexor. Sorry I’m not too sure how this platform works, I’ve just discovered these group questions!
I was on 10 mg Lexapro for 15 years for depression and felt great with a nice level mood the entire time. Then last month, I was hospitalized for a pulmonary embolism and had a panic attack in the middle of the night, so a psychiatrist who didn’t know me discontinued the Lexapro and put me on Effexor 75 mg and I feel beyond horrible. Nausea, lightheaded, no appetite, lost 20 pounds. I’m seeing a new psychiatrist week after next and hope she’ll put me back on Lexapro, maybe 20 mg while weaning off Effexor. No one mentioned it had so many awful side effects and is a nightmare to get off of.
No, but I did switch from Zoloft to Effexor. I foun d Zoloft easy to withdraw from. I am now trying to withdraw from Effexor XR.
Are you thinking of switching?
Yes, thinking of going back to Lexapro since I really don't think Effexor is doing much for me these days. How was Zoloft for you?
yes Zoloft was fine. I stopped it cold turkey with no withdrawal symptoms, but I got depression again. That time my doctor put me on Effexor.
Effexor withdraw can be excruciating if not done under medical supervision. Be careful. Be well.
effexor, effexor xr, lexapro, luvox, zoloft, anxiety, obsessive compulsive disorder, social anxiety disorder, generalized anxiety disorder, anxiety and stress, doctor
