Hi, REB!
Lexapro is an excellent first choice for the long term control of anxiety. It's FDA approved to treat Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD) and is also prescribed for many other anxiety disorders.
It doesn't work immediately but takes several weeks to become fully therapeutic. It corrects imbalances in the brain and it's neurotransmitters to control rather than just masking the symptoms of anxiety.
