I've been on clonazepam, Klonopin, for over 35 years, and in a couple of weeks, I became used to the side effects. Now I can't tell that I've taken them, but I certainly can tell if I haven't. My shrink decided the benefits out weighed the risks. So, if you're still having problems, call your psych doc. 4 mgs a day to start out with is a major dose. I started at .5 mgs a day in divided doses. Ask him or her the rational for such a large starting dosage. Might be interesting, definitely tell him all of your symptoms.
I think you are on way to much, especially with another benzo, restoril.
Peace,
Hippie
What do you mean that you got used to the side effects? Does the Klonopin still treat you for what you need it for?
Sara,
Yes it does or I wouldn't be taking it for all these years. Actually, I am going from 4 mgs a day to 3 mgs a day to see what happens. My new shrink thinks doxepin, an old psych med, can be substituted for the Klonopin for my GAD and panic. Do far, it's a no go.
As you know, there is no cure for mental illnesses. The best we can hope for is controlling the symptoms. I take other head meds also. It's hard to find a combo that works, when you do find it, why fix what isn't broken?
Go figure,
Hippie
I agree. I worry about you reducing the amount, but remember the side effects will go away after awhile. It's definately worthwhile to live with peace of mind. I have to take anti-depressants.
I need to take Klonopin for a seizure-like condition called myoclonus caused by my stroke. So it will most likely be lifetime for me.
I do need to ask you whether you kept having to raise your dose during the years to keep it working? I wonder if I will need to keep raising it with time to control my convulsions and twitching at night.
Thanks for your response.
Sara
Sara,
I friended you so they're we may take this situation to a more sheltered corner of this site. There I will answer all of your questions and try to give you all of the information I've learned over the years. Do I still have anxiety and panic attacks while on Klonopin, yes. But my life is manageable right now, and I'm in the process of buying and refurbishing a 1975 built home. Am I stressed, you betcha. Let's just say, I never want to see the inside of Home Depot ever again. With my OCD, the sinks and faucets had to match. To me, managing to deal with one particular sales man and design something had me to the point of sweating in the air conditioned store. Does everything match, NO. Just something else to obsess over.
So, just saying they without my Klonopin, I would have been hysterical over the whole issue. Now, I try to accept that everything is not going to be 100% in my life. What being mentally ill took away, Klonopin gave me back some control over me.
I could go on, but let us take talk therapy behind closed doors, where it belongs at this point...
As a side bar, most of my life is scattered about this site on more posts to address other peoples questions.
Just sayin',

Well thank god ur only on 1mg I'm on 3 4x a day n my husband n kids were worried about cuz I wud get zombied out n nodd off slur my words drop things but after awhile it shud get better if not talk to ur doc! Hope I helped
Everyone is different with their reactions to meds, but taking 1 mg 4x a day seems like a very high dose. I take .5 mg once a day and it helps put me to sleep at night.
Are you taking it for anxiety? Or for seizures? I would think that a lower dose might be in order. Some people find a very strong dependency to it, like I do. One time I tapered down off of .5 mg a day. Each time I cut the pill it sent me into severe depressions which went away several weeks later. So get some help with tapering off of it. Or you may not have much trouble at all.
I take it for anxiety,Mograce
I take it for anxiety,mograce
Hello mograce. Yes Klonopin does. Most all the benzodiazepines have the side effect to impair your cognitive ability. In regards to our age, it can become a major nuisance leading to becoming more forgetfull and less alert. Regards, pledge
Oh yes it does have the potential to make one "zombie" like. If this persists more than 2 weeks you should tell your Dr and possible get switched to something else. Hope this helps.
My wife has been a zombie for 20 years I beg her to stop taking that junk
