... years. I'm very afraid. I'm a fully housebound agoraphobic that suffers from OCD, anxiety, and panic attacks. Will this help me? I don't want to get worse!
Just took a 10mg prozac. I was extremely anxious before. I haven't wanted to take it for over 5?

On Day 2 of my 20mg prescription of Prozac... almost wanted to give up today and not continue the prescription because I am afraid of having this pill overtake my body/poison me, but I keep reading positive reviews and honestly, my life before this prescription was already filled with sooo much fear, phobias, anxiety, so I feel like there is not much left to lose, and the potential to make my life so much better and help me achieve my goals. I don't want to end up a recluse, and afraid to leave my house, which is how some of my family members have ended up later in their lives. I still love them, of course. I'm lucky to have a girlfriend who is supportive, wants to see me suceed, and encourages me to not give up just yet and give it a try (at least a month). If it doesn't work out then I'll have my doctor prescribe me regiment so that I may ween of more comfortablely. I need to stop overthinking it, and just take it day by day, this prescription could help make life exciting again
I was prescribed the generic of prozac today and I'm so nervous. Im so glad I found this group chat because it has really eased my worries. But, I was wondering if anyone has tried taking this med @ night. And if so, does it affect your sleep? I work and I dont think taking it in the morning would be a good thing for me due to the possible side effects.
I tried prozac it was awful. Made me worse then I was before. Now I just started lexapro 5mg. Seems to be okay so far. No side effects on day 8.
It’s nice to hear good stories here. I was prescribed 10mg of Prozac. My doctor thinks I have generalized anxiety disorder which has been giving me fatigue and anxiety that I’ve never had before. I am reallly really hopeful that this medicine will give me my life back as I have been out of work for two months now.
Yes sounds like me and it’s helping I’m on 10
Weeks
Hi David how are you doing now I know it's an old post but I've just started 10mg of fluoxetine I am on my 6th day and feeling a bit rough with anxiety at the moment
Hi I need help I was prescribed 10mg Prozac been in my cupboard for one week I’m so scared to start the medication. I have small children who need me and my depression/chronic headaches/ anxiety are really affecting my life. It’s hard for me to even function but I’m afraid of the meds. I finally tried Xanax two nights ago .25 mg after having the prescription for three weeks in cupboard it helped me feel normal but my doc says I need the Prozac and doesn’t recommend me taking Xanax for more than 3 x in one month. I don’t know what to do. Prior to this all I took for headache were Tylenol or Motrin! But I’m crying most of the day or feel weird and dizzy out in public at grocery stores or gym. I’ve lost 27 lbs and I get constant headaches at back of my head and feel earfulness. I’ve seen an ENT and a neurologist had mri and ct scans but they come back fine with only some arthritis in the neck.
Hina,
I’d love to chat with you as our stories sound completely similar. I’m also a mom who feels completely overwhelmed with anxieties and it is taking over my life and effecting my ability to be a mom
Hi Hina81, i know it’s been awhile but just wondering how you did with the Prozac and how long you took it for or still taking it? I am in the same situation you mentioned and having same symptoms. It’s been a month and I haven’t tried the medication yet...
I have just started taking 20mg (might actually go down to 10) after some set backs in my life that have caused my anxiety and depression to return. My husband has also just gone on medication after losing his job and I am so worried about him this is one of the reasons for my stress.
Prozac has worked for me before and I was on it for 1.5 years with the only side effect being weight gain but that may have been because I was happy I was actually eating not dry heaving into a toilet bowl like I am now!! Ahhh I really hate my anxiety like I'm sure you all do. It makes me cry sometimes. I really hope you all succeed with your medication. And I am just here to say it does work and that's why I'm doing it again. This time I will be more careful about the amounts of food and what I eat.
Also remember to talk to people and see a psychologist as this can really help just to learn some coping mechanisms.
I was just prescribed 10 mg of Prozac for Major depression and anxiety with ptsd and panic. I want to start taking this drug but have read about the side effects... like hair falling out , weight gain etc. Would like some feedback. I don't want to add more issues to my already difficult life. I have tried paxil in the past but had to stop it due to +++ tremors.
Hi, pinky! I wouldn't be afraid to start a new medication as every medication affects every individual differently and, in general, less than 10% of users experience temporary side effects lasting just a few days to a week or two. Even fewer have long term side effects.
Finding the right medication is a trial and error until you find the one that's effective with minimal if any side effects. The alternative is living with depression, anxiety, and panic attacks. Doesn't seem like a reasonable option, does it?
Worse case, if a medication doesn't settle well for you after a couple of weeks, you can taper off it and try another.
Think positively and don't let your anxiety about starting Prozac overwhelm you. The power of negativity is very powerful, indeed, and your own anxiety may cause a failure if you let it.
Best regards and you'll be feeling better soon!
Hi thank you so much for answering so quickly and for your reassuring response. You are right... my anxiety is stopping me from trying this medication. My goal is to fill the prescription this weekend and start taking the medication. Thank you for your support and reassurance. I really appreciate it and will stay connected.
Good luck and do let us know how yo're doing, okay?
Hello, I’ve been struggling with anxiety for the last year. I’m a college student and will graduate in May. I have been under a lot of pressure for my senior year of college. Last year I had my first panic attack while sitting in class and had to just walk out, I thought I was having a heart attack, as many of you know what it feels like. Ever since then I was afraid of having another panic attack and the vicious cycle of panic started, my fear of another attack increased my anxiety and I have had high anxiety this semester. I finally went to my doctor two weeks ago I tried Lexapro and it was awful. She gave me a very low dose of Xanax which I take when I’m in class and I start to feel like I’m going to panic. Butt doctor wanted me to start Prozac, I’m a little nervous to take the Prozac, it’s only 10mg. I just wanna get back to my normal self again without the anxiety :(
I am starting fluoxetine again and I’m very nervous as well? I’ve been on Paxil for a couple of mos but I can’t wake up in the morning and I do not sleep well at night! I had taken amitriptyline for a while before Paxil but I was having nightmares? Otherwise it was terrific for me!!!
Just started 10mg of fluoxitine for axiety and worrying about side affects can anyone help thanks
You should probably read this about Prozac (fluoxitine). It will help you to understand the medication, how it works, it's POSSIBLE side effects, etc:
https://www.drugs.com/prozac.html
Keep in mind that very few people have any significant side effects; you may experience some drowsiness and/or headaches initially but these effects will resolve on their own in a matter of days to a week or so. Also, you may find that you feel some increased anxiety at first ~ this is *normal* and will also go away. Your doctor has started you on a very low dose so that your body can adjust more easily. You may need to increase your dose along the way and this too is normal.
Antidepressants work slowly on depression/anxiety and it may take as long as four to six weeks for you to feel the full benefits but, I can tell you, it's worth the wait!
Feel free to post here with any questions or concerns you may have and remember that your doctor is the one you need to stay in touch with to report your progress, okay?
I took used to take prozac 20 mg back in 2012 and it helped me a lot. I stopped taking it for 2 years and just started taking 10 mg today. Before Prozac i took Paxil and it wasn't a good experience. Give Prozac about a month for it to start working again.
I registered just to respond to your question. I developed panic attacks out of the blue that had me in the ER 7 times in September. It was horrifying. I became a recluse and no matter what I did I could not get out of bed go to the store etc. Something was so chemically wrong. I was hesitant that the Prozac would work but it saved my life. I'm 45 and was dependant on Xanax but it wasn't helping. Now I'm almost off Xanax only taking a .5 dosage at night to sleep. I'm on 10 mgs. Of Prozac and I go all day now and I feel great. The first dose I felt anxious but within a few weeks I felt better. Maybe only a few days. It's been about 2 months now and I'm catching up on life and I feel amazing like I never have. Let me mention that this was my first go around with antidepressants. IT SAVED MY LIFE!
Thanks for the question / answers -- I've been prescribed Paxil / Ativan and now 10 mg Prozac. I have yet to try any of them. I'm going to give Prozac a shot, why not try it? I overthink everything. I've googled way too many horror stories. We need more positive feedback out there, especially for those of us stuck, not giving anything a try!
There is a common misconception that the *horror stories* one reads are the typical experience of all users. In truth, <10% of patients report any side effects and <5% are considered serious enough to stop the medication, adjust the dosage. or inconvenience the user.
It's true that we need more positive feedback but those 90% of patients are too busy enjoying happy, fulfilling lives to be hanging around in chatrooms.
Ready all of your comments have helped me so much. I have been prescribed Celexa, Zoloft, Prozac and haven’t taken one yet. I have severe anxiety and panick attacks. I am seriously making myself sick with my anxiety. I go maybe a couple of weeks doing fine and then I have a panick attack and end up in the Er. I am so tired of being sick and not being able to function in every day life. But I’m so scared to start taking my Prozac. I’m sure the side effects can’t be any worse than what I am going through now. I love knowing I’m not alone.
They put me on 20 my and I feel the same way as you did. Do you feel better?
Hi Sissy,
I have been on prozac for a couple of months and found it very good for anxiety and ocd,i suffer badly from panic attacks and anxiety along with depression and ocd,the prozac definitely helped my symptoms, you have nothing to be scared of.They will help you. Take care
I have suffered severe panic attacks and agoraphobia for 10 years. I took ben'ez for that time, three years ago I began prozac 10mg daily, I felt better within a few days... I began cognitive behavor therapy and then dialectical behavoral therapy. I just returned from a trip to israel and I'm much more free! There is hope!!! Also I never took more than 10mg and I haven't taken a bene in 2.5 years.
Hello Sissy. I was on Zoloft. There is very little clinincal difference between the two drug, in as much as except for the halflife between the two, they are very much the same. I'm trying to say that I can comment on your question, in as much as that they are alike. I'd just like to echo Laurie, what are you afraid of? People who take prozac have very few side effects, per say. Your dose low, a beginners. as I call it. It will most certainly help your nerves, anxiety, along with your panic attacks. Sissy, give the drug a chance to work, I believe once it does, you'll begin and will be feeling a whole lot better.
