My doctor gave me this for the pain in my back.

I am on Gabapentin (Neurontin) 300mg a day, just getting ready to up that to 600mg tomorrow. I use it as a preventative for migraines (15-17 of them a month)
I have to say, I have been on it almost 3 weeks and have had only 6 migraines. Averaging 2 a week at this rate, I may actually end the month with only 8 migraines :):) Whho boy! Now wouldn't that be great!!
I am hoping when I up the dosage, it will knock on more of them. As for side effects, no bad ones yet. No weight gain at all. On the plus side, I sleep much better at night and don't seem to have as much Fibro pain either.
Stay with the Gabapentin if you can, eat smart, drink lots of water for your kidnesy and you ought to be fine :)
I made a mistake on my calendar, I've been on Gabapentin 300mg 2 weeks, not 3 weeks with 6 migraines... so not so great on the migraine front, but still hoping :):)
I have terrible migraines... my doctor has prescribed this medication for me. Right now, I can barely work and look at the computer screen due to a terrible migraine. Just curious how many mg. I should take to start relieving these. I have migraines at least 4-6 times a week, so pretty much daily, and the sun is my worst enemy!
I would highly recommend going to the mayo clinic site and search migraines as gabapentin isn't mentioned as an effective drug for migraines. Perhaps a differen drug would bring better results.
Thanks kmaverikaz, I will check them out!! Today is a good day, no migraine... yet!! I've had them really bad since I was about 10 or 11 years old, but wasn't diagnosed until I was 25.
Have been on gababentin 300mg 3 times a day for several years and found it more than adequate for my back pain and sciatica pain. Don't know what I would do with out it.
I have restless leg syndrom, thats what they call it. Sometimes my legs start to ache before i go to bed, and sometimes jerk soooo bad bad i can't lay in bed. Also have taken Requip. Is their any help??
i have been prescrbed gabapentin due to my m s which now is giving me terrible pain in my legs .i have just been told by my m s nurse they can cause weight gain does any body else taking them have had any weight gain thanks sandra
Hi I just started taken this med today and even though it made me sleepy I have less pain in my neck & shoulder
I have has 2 TMJ surgery and anterior spinal dicsitimy with fusion of my 5/6/7 and have been in pain every since 2010
Went to do PT but no help.
In heard good and bad so if someone could talk to me about the med that would help me out !!
I've suffered with migraines for years and would have at least 21 days of the month down with severe pain and agony.. I went to a neurologist and he started injections of Botox in my head, neck and upper back and they have been a life saver.. I usually can make it 3 months and have to go back for more injections but I must say this has changed my life for the better. I'm able to participate in life and I couldn't be happier. If I have to get something for the pain. This works...
They put me on this in the US Navy for anxiety and depression! Odd selection, but it worked. I was on 300mg 2x daily and 600mg at night for sleep. I felt on top of the world! Now that I do have some minor nerve damage in my back I am going to talk to my PCP about putting me on it again.
Interesting, Gabapentin is great for anxiety but increases depression and has been sued by the Federal Drug Admin. for increased suicides while using this drug. I highly recommend a different approach.
I have spinal stenosis and have suffered with cervical and lumbar spine pain for several years. About two months ago the pain began generating down both legs to my knees, which prevented me from sleeping through the night. My doctor gave me Gabapentin 300 mg., and I am now able to sleep all night. I take 3 capsules daily. I do feel somewhat light-headed during the day, but it isn't anything that prevents me from functioning. This drug has been a miracle for me :)
Yes, Gabapentin 300 mg. is the generic name for Neurontin which
is the brand name prescription medication. Gabapentin since it is
in the generic version it isn't very expensive like the brand name Neurontin.
Yes indeed, Gabap. is the generic for Neurontin. I take 900 mg, 4x a day (the top dose) for facial neuropathy and it helps tremendously. I have no side effects, except an increased appetite. It blocks much of the pain, and I can tell when it's time for the next dose, as the pain creeps back.
So you can take Gabapentin instead of Neurontin. Only the price is different. Good luck to you.
One of my doctors gave Gabapentin for nerve damage in my feet and horrible back pain,. I found this drug ineffective . It doesnt even "touch" the pain. It's "suppose" to tell the brain your not in pain and block it,,however,my brain is not telling my feet and back .Therefore I quit taking it and would not waste my money on this.
I am taking Gapapentin 300 MG for nerve damage in my feet and the only thing it does is put me to sleep. It does nothing for the pain in my feet. It says
to take1 capsule 3 x a day, no way can I stand to do that. I would be a zombie. I am taking myself of the mess today. I am so glad I read the reviews
and to find out I am not the only one with doubts about this medicine.
Gabapentin is the generic name for Neurontin. I've been taking Neurontin since 1997 and it helps tremendously. I've never had any side effects at all. I'm very satisfyed with the dose my doctor has prescribed for pain. 400 mg.
yes i agree with you very much.. it had agreed with me also..
I have been on gabapentin for 21/2 years started with very low dose300mg 2xaday then after two weeks up to 300mg morn, noon &300 in pm now I'm up to600mg x3 daily and it has helped on my fibromyalgia .I have not had any problems with it,allows me to be pain free, sometimes I do get attacks but hot & cold pack therapy helps me.
On the bottle mine says mfg amneal-substituted for Neurontin 300 mg caps. I take 2 300mg 3 times a day. Substituted means one thing is replacing another. I read or heard somewhere, don't remember where, that there was some sort of problem with neurontin something to do with a class action law suit that it caused unexpected problems. I will try to find out more...
yeah let me know what you find out... my mother stopped taking them bc she couldnt swallow them anymore after taking them for 2yrs. The dr told her he wouldnt give it to her in liquid, like she asked. He told her to empty capsules in pudding, and she told him she tried and it was too nasty to swallow. He did nothing and she stopped taking them n told her nurse... shortly after, she died. she had foam around her mouth when i found her, ive been doing some reading and i think she may have had a seizure. i just wish i had an autopsy done.
Gabapentin has been associated with an increased risk of suicidal acts or violent deaths.[40] In 2009, the FDA issued a warning of an increased risk of depression and suicidal thoughts and behaviors in patients taking gabapentin, along with other anticonvulsant drugs[41] modifying the packaging insert to reflect this.[26] In July 2009, the manufacturer of gabapentin (Pfizer) went to trial regarding the association between gabapentin and the increased risk of suicide.[42]
My Neuro prescribed it for me for 300mg before bedtime, for sleep and restless limb. It does NOT make me sleepy BUT my limbs do not pop. I have noticed I have been horribly moody lately and just blah bad mood, anyone else experience this?
In the prescription definition and side effects it also says if your are allergic to this drug or have any allergies the doctor should discuss this with the patient. At no time did the doctor discuss with me after knowing at least 2 allergies. I had a allergic reaction and many side affects. Make sure you tell your doctor all your allergies before you start this medication. It can cause adverse reactions. Make sure you and your body is ready for 300mg of gabapentin. Learn everything you can before you start any new drugs. One drug never fits all.
gabapentin is the generic name for Neurontin. And 300 mg is a relatively low dose.
Yes it is generic but when I had a seizure my doc discontinued neurontin which was cool with me cause of the bad taste and didnt feel like it was doing much as I am on oxy 60 2 times daily and percs 4 times daily but any way its strange how some meds affect some and not others so be careful all
It took me 3 years to get off oxy's and percodan. Be careful. I realized ,after I detoxed from the Oxycontin, that when they wear off they cause their own pain and we start to medicate that pain. It's a bad cycle.
I'm down to 2 10mg Methadone now and much more able to handle the RSD pain in my body.
Agreed. ANY opiate will cause severe withdrawal symptoms as the body develops an addiction to them. A person has to be weened very slowing or DT's will develop causing another set of problems. According to experts the two most abused are Oxycontin and Xanax and are quickly entering the mainstream of society and are popular at Pharm Parties where adolescents steal their parents narcs and they are thrown into a bowel and are grabbed and taken at will. My credentials are a Narcotics Inspector for the Federal Government. If you are a parent LOCK your narcs and other "abused" drugs so they don't get into the wrong hands.
Recently we had 2 High School seniors over-dose on a mix of pills stolen from various family members... Parents, grandparents, neighbors etc.
They put ALL the different meds into a bowl and pay $10.00 to grab whatever they get!!! Worse still.. they crush the pills up and SMOKE them!
Please be aware of how dangerous your meds can be when used like this.
LOCK THEM UP.
I wrote to the Maui News and they published the letter about this. It's important to know, as everyone seems to be hung up on Marijuanna
I got a license to grow my own medication and have been able to drop all sleeping medication.
When I Start out on Gaapentin I was on 300mg twice a day , that wasn't helping so the Doctor put me on 600mg twice a day, In about 2 days I was falling ever time I took a step, so MY husband called an ambulence to take me to the hospital I was there for one week, Needles to say I went back to 300mg twice a day, O I forgot I broke my ankel and it is in a cast. Why did this happen?
yup. I take 600mg a day. 4 times a day. I really don't think it does much, but I have seizures & it will stop them.
yes it is but be very careful. I still have a dent in my forehead from missing the overhang going down my basement steps and that was 10 years ago!! Also be extremely careful if you have any kind of kidney issues--it can really mess you up so check with your doc.
Yes, I use it for restless legs, and was also told I could take it up to six times
daily for my sciatica pain. I don't take it that often as it makes me feel like
I am on a light drunk. It does help with my legs at night tho.
i am interested on more information on the drug and restless legs, i just started takeing gabapentin and was wondering how long it take to get into your systems.. i am taking requip for rls and gab. plan on getting off of the requip soon,,
how many mgs do you take.. ive been on 300 for about two months and still got to take requip.. for rls.. does it take a long time to get into your system..

I have Multiple Sclerosis. I take 12- 300 mg capsules a day with the option to take the maximum dosage ( 13 ). i have severe nerve ending pain caused from previous relapses . The pain is still always there, but not anything close to as bad as it was when i had the most horrible attack ( relapse ) i ever had before. I take a total of 20 pills a day relating to my M.S. Pain is a regular part of my days/ yrs.Let me not forget to mention, Intravenous treatments once a month also.I,m not making fun of anybody elses pain. I,m actually jealous. can we switch for 1 day? lol
Mirapex has been my miracle drug for restless legs. Take at night. Tried all the others. And I have a very serious case of resless legs.
yes mirapex has been a wonder durg for me along with my gabapentin,, i really cant see why gabapentin seem to have such a bad reflect on people.. but not every one is the same,, i just have to say cant live with out it and mirapix
It is used for Neuropathic pain.
Yes, it is generic for Neurontin and is used for any type of nerve damage. It is the most safe drug on the market and it works by blocking the signal going to the brain that tells the brain you are in pain. When you have a back injury, almost always the sciatica nerve become involved and damaged thereby making it necessary that you use Neurontin
Yes, it is one in the same. I couldn't feel any difference. So, now he called in Baclofen. I have never tried this medication. The Neurotin is also used for mood disorders.
i was on gabapentin the generic name for nuerontin, but on the advice of "epilepsy action " u.k we were told to not accept the generic version any longer as it can cause more seizures due to something in the coating & some mix inside the capsule. i am now happily on 1180 grms a day for pain it is much more expensive than the generic ones.
i have been on it since 8/14/11 for rls. and pain in my hips and shoulders.. take 300 once a day and i feel wonderful,, no pain and no problems from it ,, like it very much,,
i have Multiple Sclerosis, and take 3600 mg / day for severe nerve ending pain. It doesn,t take all the pain away, but it lets me live a normal life somewhat. I take intravenous treatments 1x/month and take a total of 21 pills a day.
I am just going to start taking Gabapentin 300mg. Start out with 1 capsule a day for 2 days then 1 capsule twice a day for 2 days then 1 capsule three times a day thereafter.
Well, it is not used for depression per se, it is used to treat nerve pain. If you are in a lot of pain and for long periods of time, you tend to get depressed, so if the pain goes away, most likely the depression might as well, so that's how it can be used as a way to treat depression, and there are other medications like elavil that helps build up your tolerance to chronic pain. Hope this helps, take care, lambda5555m
