I'm a 47 y/o female and was diagnosed with ADHD at age 6 but I did not take the meds, (can't remember why). At age 44 I decided to get tested and was diagnosed as having ADHD (of the inattentive type). I've also suffered from anxiety all of my life. Since beginning Adderall XR 15 mg, now 20 mg for 2 months, I have been experiencing muscle pain, cramping/tightening and weakness. Adderall changed my life for the better, (except for the pain if that's the cause). Not thinking that my pain was caused by this med my Dr. began sending me to one specialist after another, a Psychologist, 2 Psychiatrists, a Neuro Surgeon, a Spine Specialist, a Neurologist, and a Rheumatologist. All specialist say there is nothing wrong. I've had a CT scan, 4 MRIs, a nerve test and several X-Rays. All show no abnormalities. I've had 4 months of physical therapy, 1 yr. of Chiropractic care and spent thousands of dollars on in home equipment to ease the pain. Nothing has helped and I refuse to take pain relievers, I don't believe covering up the problem is the answer... Recently, I was told by my Rheumatologist that I had "Myofacial Pain". REALLY?! I'm no Dr. but I believe that was the reason WHY I made the appt. to see him. What I'd like to know is the cause of my pain... :/ Needless to say, I'm completely frustrated and becoming increasingly depressed. It hurts to do simple household chores, I rarely leave my home, and out of desperation I spend up to 10 hrs a day on the internet looking for answers. I'm beginning to wonder if the Adderall XR is the cause. Has anyone else experienced these issues while on this med? If so, what ADHD med were you switched to? PLEASE HELP!!! (Sorry for the lengthy question) Thanks!
Is Adderall XR causing muscle pain, cramping and weakness?

At ur age the bone density is not as rigid as of a 20 years old female..The symptoms u mentioned wont show in almost any of the imaging tests trust me dont waste ur money... At this age taking adderall is a risky choice as it comes with multiple cardio and gastro related problems... its somewhat called ideopathic pain... weakness and fatigue are the common side effects of the wear off... Do get ur bp checked once in a while as hypertension can cause muscle pains..as long as u eat well and drink fluids containing electrolytes u will be fine..Also moniter ur sodium intake..avoid eating high salt diet close to your sleep time..and most important is please have a banana once a day in ur diet..its full of magnisum and trust me u will feel better.
Hi. I have temporomandibular joint disorder (aka tmj disorder). I clench and grind my teeth at night. I had this many years prior to ever taking adderall. However, I do find once the adderall begins to wear off, I have a little headache and it seems to be triggered by my jaw. I started wearing my bite guard during the hours I take the adderall, and I definitely feel less myofacial pain, but there is still some pain.
See if you can monitor if you are clenching or grinding your teeth when you are taking the adderall. Often times the adderall helps us focus that we don't realize we are clenching or grinding. You could possibly benefit from wearing a bite guard.
@painhell Sorry to hear this. The simple solution is to stop your Adderall for a week and see if that’s the issues. It most likely is... if the pain is prohibitive, and keeping you in, it doesn’t seem like the benefits are worth it. There are other ADHD drugs... I hope you find a solution
Yes! I’ve had the same experience with Adderall. It’s pretty debilitating. My muscle weakness is severe - to the point of having difficulty using my arms and legs. Also countless specialists but no diagnosis. I’ve been on Adderall twice as an off label use for depression. Both times I would go through episodes of weakness and tremors. It’s awful.
Ok so I’m no doctor and not really a frequent user of my prescription (I started using Noopept instead; it is very good focus, very nontoxic, and doesn’t give me any physiological problems), but the fact that doctors didn’t make the connection drives me crazy! I am just a biology student at the moment but even I can tell you it’s definitely in part due to the Adderall. It is a vasoconstrictor, so blood flow to muscles is pretty decreased making it a bit more difficult for them to function exactly right causing them to tense and become knotted; especially in places that involve consistent use such as the back and neck. As for the tooth pain... Adderall, as a CNS stimulant, definitely puts you on edge as it releases adrenaline in your brain, which, if you aren’t doing something along the lines of the fight or flight response can make you unconsciously do things like fidget, bounce your leg, tighten all your muscles or...
clench your jaw so hard it causes unbearable soreness in the teeth that lasts longer than the drug is still acting. I suggest keeping it in mind and reminding yourself to relax your mouth. On top of that it can cause really bad pain in the jaw muscle in the same way as it does the back and neck muscles. This can also transform into bad headaches considering your Masseter muscle (jaw muscle) is attached to a whole network of other muscles that wrap around your head and extend down your neck.
I definitely recommend the yoga and stretching before and during the effects of the drug to increase blood flow. Also, try to make sure you are physically comfortable in whatever position or environment you are in to lessen the pain before it comes on. Plus, definitely listen to HJ2 about lowering the strength of the prescription.
Also, is it just me or does it seem like doctors sometimes, if the problem isn’t dire, keep some info from patients so they come back/go to other doctors to spend more money?
I want to add my experience to this thread to make sure people can find it easily on Google. I'm 33 and have been on between 20-10mg of both XR and IR amphetamines for just under a year. My back and neck muscles, which have carried my stress my entire life, are now intolerably tense. I just recently pulled my hamstring badly for the first time in longer than I can remember across a lifetime of running and cycling. I'm glad I thought to make the connection, and glad I found this thread with others sharing my symptoms. I'll reply back after trying some of the suggested remedies starting with coconut water and salt supplements.
This is an answer to my prayer. I believe after taking Adderall for 15 years that all of a sudden it started making me sick. At first I thought it was the fillers in the generic, so I switched to brand name. My brain fog was gone, but I developed planters fasciitis, and my mouth tingles and my gums are receding. Has anyone else had that experians? I am going to try switching to Ritalin and go from 30 X-RAY to 20.
I have read your post and do understand your pain. I currently, do take Adderall XR 45 mg and been experiencing same pain. However, I find that keeping hydrated with water through out the day, helps out a lot, and its actually recommended. Also Fish oil helps as well. I have also noticed that when I was physically active and working out, I did not experience any pain at all. Thus I believe the combination of water, exercise and fish oil has helped me tremendously.
I’m so glad this old post is still here! I’m on a similar journey. I eat right, exercise, stretch, drink plenty of water, and am very fit except for the constant game of “whack-a-mole” with the myofacial trigger points in my neck, back and shoulders. I’ve been taking Adderall XR for 15 years or so, doing my best to keep the dose as low as possible to avoid unwanted side effects (like insomnia), but now my health seems to be suffering so I’m slowly trying to taper off of it. There are 2 things I want to contribute to this discussion: one is the wonderfully hydrating effects I feel from drinking COCONUT WATER! It’s instantaneous - my eyes and muscles begin to feel moisturized the minute I drink it. I’m guessing because it contains electrolytes, including magnesium and potassium, which a lot of other readers said has helped them as well.
(It also has vitamin C, but I’ve never found it to interfere with the positive effects of the Adderall). The second thing I’d recommend to anyone taking Adderall is to PLEASE KEEP AN EYE ON YOUR BONE HEALTH by taking calcium and Vitamin D supplements, and having your doc monitor your bone density. A 2016 study found that young people who take stimulants have low bone density, and it’s not clear whether this effect can be reversed. I’m not young, but at 56 have experienced significant, early bone loss in my spine and femur and am in pain every day. I’ve seen a slew of docs (orthopedist, neurologists, PT’s, etc) and this isn't even on their radar. Only when I mentioned this study to my primary doc did the lightbulb go off. Even then her response was “take a supplement with vitamin D and Calcium” and we’ll check your bone density again in 2 years. I’m now under the care of a naturopath and taking Osteoben to try to restore my bone health. It’s really frustrating to think that I invested so much time and energy into keeping my body fit and healthy only to wind up with a fragile skeleton! I can’t run or throw a ball right now because of the pain. I sure hope you guys are able to avoid this!
I highly recommend checking your Vitamin D levels. I had similar pain and weakness (almost flulike symptoms) and my vit D levels were drastically low. I noticed a great difference after just 2 weeks of supplements.
You most likely will benefit from myofascial therapy. I’m a master bodyworker that specializes in pain management. My patients, and clients come in either weekly, bi-monthly, or monthly for maintenance. Depending on what works for them, they try to get scheduled for return visits just before that threshold of pain reoccurs. I myself have been getting therapeutic massage for pain management, and injury prevention since I was 18yrs old... I’m now 52. Specializing in sports & injury therapy, myofascial work is the most used technique in my practice and helps alleviate the built up tension and assists the flushing of lactic acid from within the tissue. I work on all ages, infant to elderly, even my grandchildren know to ask when they need an area fixed from tension. Myofascial therapy helps people with MS, fibromyalgia, old injury, sports injury, joint replacements, soft tissue surgery, and postural imbalance caused pain. I hope this helps point you in the direction, to find the right person. “less pain, more life! ”
Im 35 and had many injuries in the past. Where the Adderall seems to hurt the most is old traumatic injuries. Not sure y, I've been on 60mg a day for over 10 yrs. It only hurts my bad injuries. I kno this doesn't help but it might help your dr. I've been in the hospital every 3 months since I was 17 and have a better knowledge I've learned of some pharmacy technicians. I got badly hurt when I was 17, been on everything known to man. Try splitting your does, that may help. It does me
Here is my related experience in brief... I'm 40yrs old- I eat well, have a good profession and as a cyclist and part-time carpenter I have an active lifestyle. Taking care of my mind and body has always been a priority. Having been diagnosed with ADHD some years ago I have been trying different treatments for various reasons all under the 'care' of my psychiatrist. About a year ago I requested to try adderall- because it was the cheapest ADHD drug here in Canada. Around this past January my dosage got up to 60mg. Around that same time- almost exactly I began experiencing numbness and tingling in my right little finger and ring finger. It slowly got worse eventually spreading to the entire right hand and wrist. Being a cyclist and woodworker I assumed it was something like carpal-tunnel. Had some tests done that came back negative. Dr said it's likely related to cycling and work regardless. So I started seeking other treatment.
Eventually the symptoms spread to my arm, then to my left arm, shoulders and even back! Growing concerned I spent more on various therapies, cut out cycling all together and tried to limit the amount of physical labour at work. About a month ago I came across an article regarding the connections between adderall and high blood pressure. Digging a bit deeper I found other people on adderall having the exact symptoms I experienced. I immediately had my blood pressure taken and it was extremely high! and my standing heart rate was a booming 90-100 bpm. I monitored these numbers for a couple days and they were consistent. After talking to my alarmed Psychiatrist I cut my adderall dosage in half and literally the next day my blood pressure and heart rate went back to normal, and the numbness in my fingers went away. I couldn't believe it. I've slowly been decreasing my dosage and actually just went completely off today for the first time. I'm still experiencing some joint and muscle pain and maybe this isn't related (all though I still think it is) but all I can say is that without a doubt adderall caused many negative affects. It had many benefits that helped me- hence why I kept asking for more- but clearly my body couldn't hack it. I'm still not sure what to think of my Psychiatrist simply giving me more when I asked for it with little to no monitoring.
i have such awful foot pain and it just hit me that its started really bad when i started adderall xr now ive just read some other woman had the same problem on this site any suggestions on how to get rid of this pain without pain meds ?
IM OPEN
heres some food for thought, ive been on adderall for many years 20mg tablets twice daily and i two started experiencing sore muscles, muscle cramps and hip and knee pain that grew more intense with time til it got to the point that i couldnt even walk enough to mow the lawn on a hot day, then my doctor advised me adderall drains fluid from the body in large quantities and while taking adderall patients should drink plenty of WATER, not soft drinks or sports drinks but pure water because due to the extra fluid loss with the adderall theres also the lowering of potassium in other words i was suffering dehydration associated with the taking of adderall, so i upped my water consumption [doubled it if doing alot of physical exersion] and in my case that done the trick! try it!
Hi add,
Yes that does make sense. People who start having muscle cramps, spasms and pain should evaluate how much fluid they are taking in.
Potassium levels drops with dehydration. Starting on a new med may interact just by making the body slightly dehydrated.
Ex... lasix by itself may not cause symptoms, a stimulant may push it just enough to cause muscle cramps and twitching.
Increase your fluid intake and eat a banana a day, but if still remains a problem...
See a doctor for lab tests!
Low potassium can cause serious heart rate changes.
Best wishes
:-)
