Actually, its not a side-effect of the drug but a side-effect of having lower than normal stomach acids. Since Nexium reduces your stomach acid levels, if the dose is to high or your acid/GERD is mild, it may indirectly cause a loss of appetite.
If you are taking the drug short term - a week or two - I wouldn't worry about it. If its a long term treatment check with your doc to make sure the dose isn't too high.
Hi there, I take Nexium 40mg too. It never took my appetite away. I agree with maso4169 and caringsonbj. You should contact your doctor. It sounds like it could be something else you are taking of are you feeling a little depressed? Keep in touch and let us know how it goes. Take care.
Thank you for responding to my question, I am very grateful.
Your welcome Kerrie.
in the past I have had a lot of gastrointestional surgery, afterwards I had problems that made it necessary to prescribe Nexium I have looked the side effects up neither did I find this particular one nor did I experience this loss of appetite, please talk with you prescribing physician or your gastroenerologist just to be on the safe side
Thank you for responding to my question. I am very grateful.
I also take nexium 40mg. and have not experienced what you have.
I checked and loss of appetite as such is not listed as a side effect as a matter of fact under "Side effects by body system" under Gastrointestinal possible side effects are increased appetite and anorexia, which is very contradicting.
I strongly suggest you contact your Dr. right away and inform him / her what you are experiencing.

I hope you get well soon.
All the best and take care.
I have been taking Nexium 40mg in the morning and night for the last week and am extremely nauseous, then yesterday began vomiting and diarrohea, extreme headache and muscle pain and total lack of energy, barely able to move off the couch. I had assumed I had caught a gastro bug but reading this site has enlightened me that the medication could be the cause of my symptoms. Reading about the shooting pains up the sides of one person's neck has been the final nail in the coffin as this has been a constant and I have put it down to stress. I shall stop taking the meds and contact my GP. Thanks.
You are welcome, and yes contact your Dr. asap.
All the best,
Thank you for the reply. I was very grateful for your advice. I saw a locum (my GP was away) & he thought I may have got a gastro bug, but to go off nexium for a week and if I develop the symptoms when I start them again then to discontinue altogether.
I hope you get well soon, these are my most sincere wishes.
All the best, oh and by the way, no need to thank me!
