I was just diagnosed with hypothyroidism, with a TSH of 8.6. My doctor started me on 30mg of Armour Thyroid, and asked that I come back in 6 weeks for another blood test to determine if I will need a different dose. Today is the 5th day I have taken it (in the am on an empty stomach, 3 hrs before breakfast). So far I don't feel anything. I may even be more tired these last few days, definitely not any better. I am trying to be patient, but I was so hopeful this medication would let me feel like myself again! I would really appreciate if anyone could answer these questions.
1) When did you first start to notice ANY effects after first starting Armour (not switching from another medicine, but starting the first time after diagnosis)?
2) How long until you felt 100%? (or as better as you got if not 100%)
3) Did anyone feel worse before feeling better after starting Armour? (I was thinking maybe if the dose isn't high enough, it could still trigger your natural thyroid stimulation to drop - and since I'm not replacing enough thyroid with Armour, I could initially feel worse until my dosage is upped?)
Thank you for your help! ~Molly

Hi Molly. My guess is that your dose is very low to start. My TSH was in the high 3.8 and I take a minimum of 90mg of Armour. Everyone's body reacts different, though so you may have medication changes every month or so till they get you to an optimal level. Pay attention to your symptoms. Blood levels can be different in everyone, but your symptoms are uniquely you. Write down each week how your feeling and anything that improves. I know the feeling of just feeling horrible and having to wait on the medicine to build up enough between dose adjustments. I'm going thru it right now after having been on NP Thyroid for 6 months because it was cheaper. For me it was like I wasn't taking anything and all my symptoms returned with a vengeance. Doc put me back on Armour at 30mg and I still don't feel anywhere near good, but have blood work coming in 2 weeks and then the adjustment.
Your symptoms are what tells the doctor how your body is doing, not just your blood levels. You might feel good with a TSH of 3, but mine is better closer to 1. Let your symptoms be your guide. Take care!!☺
I am going to start Armour in the morning. I took Levothyroxine about 5 yrs ago and I have been scared to try new meds ever since. I had anxiety thru the roof. I cried all the time, panic attacks, nausea. So I took myself off it. I went to the doctor the other day and my tsh is 13.1 so I told him about my experience with the other med so he is putting me on the Armour. I am praying that my body responds good to this. I want to feel better and be able to actually concentrate without feeling foggy, but I will absolutely never take Levothyroxine again. I will be praying for us all. Please help me, the more the better.
Hello, I’ve also been switch from synthetics to armour. I was hoping for a a relief to all my syptoms like everyone claims. I’ve been on it now 9 weeks with 3 dose changes. I feel the same if not worse. I wonder if it’s not for everyone. For reference o had a TT over 5 years ago due to thyroid cancer. I wish my case was as many others, but it isn’t. I’ve decided to give it 6-8 more weeks if not I’m going back to synthetics. I’m not sure what else to do.
Just curious are you feeling better I just switched Armour from Synthroid not feeling better yet.
Thanks
Karen
Each time your dose of thyroid hormone medication is changed, your body has to adjust all over again to the levels of the medication. It takes a full 6 to 8 weeks for your blood levels to readjust to any changes. That's why when there is a dose change, the doctor will usually do a follow up of bloodwork two to three months later to check thyroid levels again.
Hello, i am new to this form and hope iam not on a wrong thread or taking over some ones

I was diagnosed, last Thursday, with fibromyalgia secondary to hypothyroidism. My doctor prescribed Armour and said that it would resolve the fibromyalgia as well. I started it on Friday. Yesterday morning (Tuesday), I felt better and today I felt even better. I wanted to cry tears of Joy this morning. I'm excited to improve even more. I've spent my whole spring and summer feeling like I was an 80 yo walking around with the flu. I'm 54 and am used to be active and working out! So, to answer your question it took me 4 days. But, also, I did feel worse the first few days I started it!!! I wish you luck in your journey!!
I was just diagnosed with hypothyroid, my doctor prescribed 30 mg of Armour. I took my first dose this morning. I really appreciate all the comments and experiences. Very helpful. I had no idea I was low, and now it makes sense, tired all the time, foggy brain, aching , anxiety, sleepless nights. I am really looking forward to feeling better. My doctor has me coming back in 3 weeks to re check my levels.
Hi swhitt21,
I was reading your post and I am in the same position. I was just recently diagnosed with Hashimotos and I was taking Levo and the side effects were too much for me. I have been doing a little bit of reading and I have found a direct correlation with gluten and thyroid. Does your insurance cover an allergist? Or try going gluten and dairy free to see if it alleviates some of your symptoms. I bought two books on Hashimotos one was a cookbook and the other was on the actual thyroid, that might help you as well.
I can tell you that after months of taking Levothyroxine and suffering daily from taking this garbage that after only three days of Armour Thyroid 45mg I feel like a new woman. I am not nauseated, joint pain so bad it was torture just to get in and out of my car is gone and I sleep sounder than I have in months, already the anxiety I felt is gone. So far, so very good!
I asked my endo to switch to armor 6 months ago because of side effects of levothyroxine and he assured me it wasn't from the medicine. I am going back to insist because the side effects have increased and I feel worse than I did than when I was diagnosed. Either or I will go to a holistic practitioner. My other other thought is maybe there is another underlying problem like Lupus. The symptoms are similiar. I need to further investigate this.
Hi Molly,
I have been on Armour 30 mg for 3 months and felt great after a few weeks, and I just had my dosage increased to 60mg yesterday. The reason my doctor put me on this medication was because my thyroid levels were really low and I am going through hormones therapy treatments. I never knew I had a problem with my levels ; until blood work showed low levels.
I do not feel the foggy thoughts anymore or feel tired but I am getting natural pellets hormones, which I highly recommend your area, because it helps spring up to life. The doctor will look at your blood work and only give you the hormones you are missing or low in levels.
Try it and if you start to feel strange stop! Call you doctor ASAP
Warm Regards
what has worked forme the best is to adopt a paleo diet -- one that is primarily gluten free. i've lost about 25 pounds so far, and my tsh has dropped like a stone.
since gluten products make me so sick, i know that i will stick to the gluten free diet.
recently a report was published in europe which discussed the link between gluten and thyroid disease. it's very fascinating.
Hello annie I also have thyroid disease and was diagnosed at 16. I am now 19 and I have been to several specialist and still constantly deal with thyroid problems. I have research about the gluten free diet and I was wondering what report you read about the link between gluten and thyroid problems is their any way you can send me that link or provide me with some information thank you
Molly I was just diagnosed with Hashimotos Thyroiditis after I had my thyroid removed due to Graves Disease. I was on methimazole but was just getting sicker by the day. I had my thyroid removed thinking that's the answer but I was very wrong. Now I have Hashi's after my doc decided to check my antibodies. I was taking a synthetic thyroid medicine generic of synthroid an started get sick immediately on 125 mcgs of that stuff. I found Armour Thyroid which my doctor knew very little about. I noticed a difference the 1 st day on it an my dosage was low but then as the months went by I started getting sick again with a myriad of ailments. I refused to go back to synthroid even though doc feels its better drug but here is the deal I just needed my dosage upped. If u haven't stopped eating sugar an gluten an dairy do so now. Your body will thank u and your medicine will work better for u.
I'm still battling the after effects but my diet was contributing highly to my sickness to thyroid medicine. Armour has the least side effects and it is a natural hormone. Everyone is different but be wary of synthroid an the generic synthetics. Change ur diet research what u can eat an what goes well with your thyroid medicine. Even check on all other medicine or vitamins u take because they affect ur absorbency of your thyroid medicine period. Good luck an hope it helps.
60mg is a low dose? My doctor just started me on 15mg (1/4 grain) of Armour a day. How will I know whether or not this dose is high enough to end my symptoms? The good news is, in the 4 days I've taken it, i have not felt depressed. That's a big step. But i still feel anxiety, sleepy, fatigued, cold, etc. I guess i'll know in a matter of weeks. I just have to be patient.
Don't be discouraged. The doctors start you on a low dose and go up slowly. I started on 60mg and that didn't help, but since my doctor raised me to 120, I've had so much more energy and have begun to lose weight.
This is nice to know. I have been on Levothyroxine for the past 4 years and have constantly battled fatigue, hair loss, insomnia, and an overall depressed feeling. My doctor just changed my medicine yesterday to Armour 60mg, and I am so ready for some relief. This morning was my very first dose and I am so glad to read that you finally have energy. This is exciting!
I feel for you--- thyroid has 2 compounds T3 and T4. many of the synthetic thyroid replacements don't seem to play well with the body of many people. My body can't break down the components in synthetic thyroids, but people can break down the components in Armour. I's big pharmaceutical companies. I got a letter that I can't take thyroid anymore on Jan. 1, 2013-courtesy of the HMO insurance pharm panel- It's dangerous. They say that they can't tell exactly how much thyroid is in the gland of each animal--like they can't make up a dose and check its potency-strength. It looks like I'm dying of cancer-told the 16th that it's incurable--- and the damn pharmacy board wants me sick with thyroid problems.
Armour Thyroid is very inexpensive. (Around $8.00 for 45 30mg pills.) Is it possible to just pay for it with cash apart from insurance in order to keep taking it?
Sorry, I forgot to acknowledge this in my post about paying with cash, but I'm sooo sorry that you have to deal with cancer and have the added stress of dealing with HMO messing with your meds. Take care of yourself.
Yeah I pay for it, but I have worries that if I'm admitted to the hospital for cancer that the hospital will give me something that makes me sick. They don't want me to take any-part of this is the FDA-so medicare doesn't want people to take Armour. I was so worried about this that I talked to the cancer chaplain-and said that it does happen.
