I've been on 20 mg Lexapro for about 16 years now. I have bad anxiety that started 16 years ago. I also take Buspar, gabapentin, and Klonopin. I still have anxiety sometimes. Sometimes I wonder if Lexapro is doing anything. I've thought about slowly stopping it but not sure. My psychiatrist is mainly a pill guy. If I mention it to him, he'll say OK you can stop taking it and he'll stop my prescription. He doesn't realize how hard it is to get off medications I guess because he's never had to do it. Just asking for opinions, not anyone telling me to "ask my Dr." Thanks.
How long does Lexapro work for?

Hi, TK!
Antidepressants can in fact "poop out" after long term use for some people and 16 years is certainly long term use. Since you're maxed out on the Lexapro dosage you may need to consider another medication or taper off and see how it goes. Your other meds are all good for treating anxiety and you might find that you don't need the Lexapro or another antidepressant at all.
Remember though that everyone has times when they're anxious... as long as it isn't severe,
You also might consider finding a different doctor. Just saying...
