I have been diagnosed with insulin resistance Nov 2011. Taking Metformin HCL ER 2000mg (since 11/4/11 worked my way up to full dose). Been on full dose for 2.5 weeks now. No weight loss. I am keeping total daily carbs under 45grams per day. Total calories < 1400. Protein = 60-80GRAMS per day. Diet controlled w/dietician every 6 weeks. I work out 5x per week, 45 mins each time = 50/50 cardio/strength training. Drink 8 glasses of water per day. I am very frustrated. How long does full dose of MET 2000mg take to lose any weight? My endo says he feels I can lose 10 lbs by the follow up appt 2/3/12. I haven't lose one ounce yet.
How long does it take Metformin to help me lose weight?

ps I just read somewhere that I should be taking my metformin with full glass of water. I have not been doing that. Just enough water to get the pills down. Also once or twice a week I will have a glass of sugar free lemonade w/ 1.5 oz of flavored vodka (zero sugar, BUT 6-8 total carbs). Could this interfere w/metformins' effect to help the insulin resistance?
Added 15 Dec 2011:pps the carbs I consume are 99% from vegetables, either green leafy or steamed/frozen

Hi! Not diabetic here. But do have PCOS, along with several other issues that are partially responsible for my weight gain. I also have the Mirena IUD, which is hormonal. Giving me a unwanted gift of 20 lbs.
I already had a poor appetite due to Gastroparesis. Also I cut out all soda, except for a rare occasion/or event. I was already on Spiralactone, and Linzess (diuretics). When starting Metformin on May 5th. A dosing of 500mg, 2 times a day. I am very pleased with it so far. It's wiped out all but like 3 percent of my hunger cravings. Feel not a overstuffed feeling but full, all the time. In 3 days of taking Metformin I had dropped 4 lbs. It is now May 16th , with a 14 lb loss. I also exercise as much as possible. Not less than five days a week. (Also, for anyone who struggles with exercising. Remember if your moving, no matter what that looks like, there's calories being burned). Thank you all for sharing on this post.
Energy, and Prayers to all!
Also...
- Avoid using oils when cooking
- Eat more chicken (Not fried)
- Protein drinks/Shakes
I know this is very late!!! but to all looking this up, I was the same. I was diagnosed with PCOS put on metformin, and told I needed to lose weight 500 x2 a day. I have been taking it for 5 months and haven't lost any weight. I stopped having side effects like a day later, which is highly uncommon for me.
I realised today though that I wasn't putting it in the fridge, I have a pack in my bag that I take with food and today was forced to use the spare pack at home because I misplaced my bag, all the side effects returned and i almost completely lost my appetite.
My recommendation is to leave it in the fridge and use it accordingly
I've had a weight problem all my life. Ten years ago I was diagnosed with Diabetes II. I was put on Metformin about that time (2 pills x day). About a year ago my doctor made it 3 pills a day. Ever since then I'v been losing about 2 lbs a week. I have little appetite and sometimes I have to force myself to eat. I worked hard to keep my weight at 185. Now I'm down to 155 but I don't like what my skin looks like. I think I should start lifting weights. I'm sorry this didn't happen when I was younger. (lol) When I get to 140, I think I'll clue my doctor in on it. He doesn't seem to notice my weight lose.

diabetics should abstain from alcohol. Dont get your hopes up cause metformin wont aid with weight loss. Booze is a carbohydrate and those are sugars.
I have been on metformin for a little over a month and I have lost 12 pounds. I am on 500mg once per day. I drink close to a gallon of water per day, I limit my carbs to 40g per meal and 25g per snack. I eat small meals every two hours. One thing you have to remember is that muscle weights more than fat. So you could be losing the fat and replacing it with muscle?
Hi.
I have been diagnosed with PCOS ever since I was 14, I am currently 24 years old. I weight around 160 lb and I am an extremely active person. I do fasted HIIT trainings at 6 am before work and then have another training session after work at around 5.30 pm 5 times a wek. I am on a low carb diet, and I'd like to think that my food choices are quite healthy. I have cut down my portions to about half the size this past year. I am taking birth control - Dayan 35- and have been taking Glucophage (Metformin) 500 mg once daily. I am just so unbelievably frustrated because I am putting in all my efforts to try and lose weight and its just not happening for me. I do see a bit of a change in my body shape, but for someone that is training as hard as I am and probably consuming way less calories than I am burning, I feel there should be a much bigger difference. I am feeling demotivated and am starting to believe that I'm just not meant to be "thin". Is anyone on the same boat as me?
I was on antipsychotics for 6 months and the drugs increased my Prolactin levels. My doctor prescribed me metformin for my weight gain of 7kg during my time on antipsychotics. Anyone had success in lowering prolactin levels on this drug?
I've been taken metformin since May 2016 and I changed weight from 104kg to currently 88kg. I have rheumatoid arthritis and had surgery on my feet January 2016 so my exercise is not good. I'm started on 2000mg as of today. Split in 4 daily doses. 8am. 12noon.. 4pm and 8pm. I eat small meals at dose times . Low carbs.. high protein. I eat half of my meal and then take my tablet with a glass of water then complete my meal. I find with the 4 interval doses. My body is thermos.. I'm hoping with the new dose change i can make my way towards 70kg.. Xx
I think what you are doing with low carbs, metformin and plenty of exercise is perfect. You might make sure you are not eating late at might.
Be patient and happy
I just started taking MetFormin today... I'm taking it to help with PCOS. I have been exercising for about 6 months 5-6 days a week. Hopefully this aids to my weight loss. I am 198lbs now, Let's see how far i get in two weeks when i have to up my dosage from one tablet to two a day.
How much weight have u lost so far?
Did I read you were drinking alcohol or was that someone else? First, the body will burn alcohol prior to anything else. Second, drinking alcohol with metformin could cause lactic acidosis which can be fatal. I'm sure your endo ran a FULL thyroid panel, yes?
hi
I am diagnosed with PCOS ,my doctor asked me to loose weight and he started me have 500mg metformin at daily basis, I am having this from one month but I did not see any weight lose yet and my belly is bigger than before, how longdoes it takes time to work?
I'm sorry to hear that. I was diagnosed with PCOS just recently I have been MetFormin for ten days and have lost 16 pounds. I eat a low carb diet.
Hello,
How much metformin are u taking and how often?
I talked to my doctor and she said for me to take my METFORMIN once in the am and once in the pm, but at the same time everyday. Yes with a full glass of water and to drink lot more through the day. I currently take 2000mg. I go for walks every night after dinner and I feel a lot better. Im working on getting more exercise everyday, I have a bad knee.I am just waiting on the weight to drop. Nothing yet :/
You're not gonna lose any weight on 45 carbs a day... if you REALLY wanna drop weight AND never have to take diabetic meds again, you're gonna have to go under 20 carbs a day... once you're at your goal weight you can begin slowly increasing your carbs
I've been type 2 diabetic for 14 years, to lose weight I went to 20 carbs a day... lost 21 pounds the first month alone and now I'm at 42 carbs a day for weight management. I check my BG once a day and in 9 years it's never once been over 131.
If you go low carb you will also decrease your risk for heart disease lower your cholesterol etcetera etcetera UC refined carbs and sugar are the causes of heart disease because they are the causes inflammation of the arteries and that subsequently traps cholesterol... I eat at least a stick of butter a day... (sometimes waaaay more, lol)... But I can also eat as much bacon as I want, as much cheese as I want, and as many eggs as I want... all day, everyday. My total cholesterol was initially 181 and it's now between 67-79.
More and more cardiologists are waking up to that realization that high fat isn't the culprit. But until we do to the sugar industry what we did to big tobacco that cat won't be ever be out of the bag...
Good luck!
That's a good question. My Dr started me on Phentermine 37.5 last month. I had lost 4.5 lbs. This month she also added Metformin 500 mg twice daily. She said it'll help. I'm hoping for good results.
How did this work for you? My dr just did the same for me
