That is my frustration. I have been told I'm not eligible for a heart transplant and I have been on Milrinone since Nov. 2015.
My mother has been on it for five years now intravenously. We received very few answers when we asked these questions of the doctors at the time she started it. That's part of the frustration, not knowing what to expect. But she has certainly gone past any expectation they originally had for her. I think it depends on the person how long it can help.
Hi, could you please share more info?? Thank you...
i have been on milrinone for 1 month with no adverse effect.24 hrs/7days a week. no improvement but maintaining my vitals
Been on milrinone 3 years this Sept 13, doing well, exceptional doctors, very lucky
Your comment gives me hope! What category of heart failure do you have? Do you need hospice to monitor you? My dad was has been on it for one week. Thank you.
My mother is in end stages of heart failure also. She doesn't qualify for a heart transplant so this is a forever solution for her. Against all the odds, she has just passed the five year mark. She takes care of it herself and she is 81 years old. She has only had to move the IV once in all that time. Sometimes that's when patients get into difficulties, if there becomes an infection with the line. What frustrated our family is how little information we got when she first went on it. They send you home not telling you anything. They didn't even let us know that Assisted Care facilities will not take anyone who have an open line like that (I found one exception.) Only nursing homes will. But when the person does not merit being in a nursing home, that's where there is a problem. I can tell you that the medical advances have surpassed the State laws and that leaves the families to take care of their loved ones in these complicated situations.
My father has been on it for about 5 days now, and is expected to stay on it until he can receive a donor heart... could be months. I don't really know why the fact sheet says no more than 48 hours. A person would have to stay on milrinone until they either have a heart transplant, or decide how they want their belongings split up, as it is prescribed for patients suffering from chronic heart failure.
"There is no experience in controlled trials with infusions of Milrinone for periods exceeding 48 hours." ... taken from https://www.drugs.com/pro/milrinone.html
