Do not split the Metoprolol ER tablets unless they have a score line and your doctor or pharmacist tells you to do so.
Do not crush or chew extended-release tablets. Doing so can release all of the drug at once, increasing the risk of side effects.
Yes. I have been given a dose of half a tab in am and half in pm

I switched to Metoprolol ER for this very reason, no more twice a day dosing. The ER stands for Extended Release, and should only be taken once a day.
Yes, I asked my M.D. As long as the pill is scored down the middle, that means it can be broken in half. Pills that aren't scored down the middle should not be broken in half.
Actually, if you look at the package insert metoprolol ER can be cut in half. They just should not be crushed or chewed.
