Hello, I have gained about 50 pounds in a year and a half. I've done research just today and some gain 10% of their body weight in short amount of time. Everyone is different and this has been my experience unfortunately. Weaning off asap... much luck to You.
I have been on this medication and I feel I have gain weight dose it make u gain weight
I started taking Gabapentin after a fall that caused Neuropathy. I've been able to stay slim all of my life. Since starting Gabapentin this time last year, I've gained 20 pounds. When I was able to cut back on eating prior to starting Gab., I'm intermittent fasting, eating only once daily, and starving all the time and can't lose an ounce. My pain, especially at night is unbearable.
I can no longer exercise because the pain is so bad. Unfortunately the doctors I've been to have no understanding of Neuropathy and think your wanting drugs when you just need help!
I lost 40lbs this year, started taking gabapentin and when I had to up the dose from 300mg to 1200mg I gained back 10 PDS in a couple of weeks.I feel horrible its like I couldn't get enough to eat so I'm gradually reducing the amount til I'm completely off.Its not working on my diabetic neuropathy anyway. This is the first day back to 600mg and I feel better already I had control over my hunger and cravings.Good luck with everything!
Yes. 15 pounds in two weeks. It helps the pain, but I need to make a change and I don't know the answer.
I have noticed weight gain especially in abdomen. I have been on it for years and even when I exercise , I don't lose weight. My hands are swelling also. I asked my dr. and was told that weight gain wasn't associated with this drug.
I gained 40 lbs while I was in Gabapentin, then went off if it last Summer. Because I wasn't sure it was the medication causing my weight gain, I had my Dr. put me back on it. Oh My Gosh!! I can't stop eating, and my pants are getting tight! I had so much more energy when I was off it, now I am sluggish and feel a bit down. I am going back off of it starting tonight. I worked too hard to get this weight off!! Hope this helps!
I have gained about 40 pounds total since starting gabapentin. I take about 600 mg. twice to three times per day. My MD switched me to Lyrica. We shall see how that goes, but I understand it is expensive. Weight Watchers has helped weight loss, but I am stuck after losing 25 pounds. So, time to start eliminating the likely causative candidates. I'm stopping Gabapentin tonight, and switching to Lyrica. Best of luck!
I've gain a lot of weight while on this. 40 pounds since February 16 to now (nov 16). Sure it's not all the meds fault! AFTER all I'm the one shoving food in my mouth lol. I'm going to cut back (the right way slowly). I'm on a diet now to cut back on the old lbs!
I have been taking a high dose of gabapentin for approx. 8 years for neuropathic pain. I have found it to be weight neutral. I have experienced carbohydrate craving and weight gain from other medication in the past.
I gained 35 lbs in a month and I have a gastric bypass so I know it was not from eating.
I started on gabapentin for migraines about 4 months ago, initially with 300 mg capsule and was increased to 300mg 3 times daily. I have also been taking wellbutrin for depression. Wellbutrin is the best if you want to avoid weight gain so I specifically chose it. I didnt know much about gabapentin but was tired of migraines and nothing was working. I have DEFINITELY noticed weight gain and am not happy whatsoever. All my research says weight gain is a side effect but know some might not have it. Other side effects? Memory loss, difficulty with finding right words often, lack of concentration, sluggishness..
Thanks so much megalina70 for your comment!
I have gained so much weight!!! It's so upsetting. I am happily married
and he seems incredibly attracted to me still, but lately I have noticed a big
difference in him. He seems distant and I am scared to death. I have always
been a TINY girl at 4 feet 11inches and was always considered very pretty.
lately though I am starting to hate what this medication has done to me over the time I have been taking it, but I MUST TAKE IT for my facial pain.
I didn't have any other side effects though. I think I do remember in the beg. I felt a bit wired and lack of concentration, but it went away quite quickly.
Anyhow , thanks again for the reply. Sorry you have noticed the same weight gain side effect and others! I wish you all the best!!

Hey Julie- Your welcome. As I said not everyone gains weight with gabapentin but with my being just 5 ft tall- I surely notice any fluctuation as you would! I work out and havent changed anything in my diet so was easier to pinpoint. While I need to take a preventive med for my migraines I am learning that there are alternatives that are easier on the body. I found gabapentin made me anxious, worrying about everything which started keeping me awake which isnt my norm. How long did you say that youve been taking it? I know there has to be an alternative for you as well-one that will keep your pain at bay and not lead to weight gain. Don't fret with your husband. I am engaged and have been open about my fears and frustrations-not to mention my wight gain which is icky-and he has been there for me. There is a good chance that you are harder on yourself with the weight gain than he is! :)
Absolutely! Gabapentin causes weight gain. It makes you hungry. You also tend to hold water weight. Especially the gut area. There are a lot of side effects with gabapentin. Weight gain and water retention are just few. It also leaves you in a brain fog. Gabapentin messed my system up and sent my blood sugar out of control. I am not a diabetic. I am now off gabapentin and am taking a low dose of cymbalta for my neuropathic pain and tramadol for breakthrough pain. I have CRPS/RSD. Each time my doc upped the dose of gabapentin, I would get extremely hungry and gain more weight and retain more body fluid. The brain fog would also get worse. Exercising more did nothing to abort the weight gain. Feel free to pm with any other questions you may have. Rollerskater.
Rollerskater-
Thanks for your comment. It helped me so much just to know I wasn't alone.
I experience the EXACT same symptoms you explained. The weight seems
to be all in the stomach area. I have ALWAYS had problems with stomach
bloating due to Crohns disease/IBS as well.
I've had extreme digestive problems since they took my gallbladder out years ago. Things were never the same.
I have also been having trouble with my blood sugar resutls, though I am not diabetic either.
So, you are taking Cymbalta and Tramadol? I like Tramadol and found it somewhat helpful, but Cymbablta I had a TON of reactions to.
So, you are now Gabapentin and did you ever see any decrease in weight???
Thanks so MUCH for sharing with me.
Julie
I am completely off gabapentin now and feel so much better. In fact my daughter was just remarking tonight how much more pleasant I am to be around. Kids have wonderful insight. Don't you just love it! I also have IBS and GERD. Cymbalta has been a life saver so far for me. That could change as I go up in the dose. We shall see...
Oops! I forgot to tell you I was on the gabapentin because of CRPS (Complex Regional Pain Syndrome) formerly called and still referred to by most professionals as RSD (Reflex Sympathetic Dystrophy). I never experienced any weight loss while on gabapentin. Doctors use gabapentin as well as lyrica and cymbalta to treat the neuropathic pain of CRPS/RSD.
Since I have come off the gabapentin my weight has slowly been coming down. This site drives me nuts. When you comment on a post, you can't scroll up or down and see the post. Grrrr... My hubby has the tv on and my computer is very slow, so by the time the page comes up to type, I sometimes have forgotten some of the questions I was going to answer. I hope I finally answered your questions. Please bare with me. :-) Rollerskater
I agree it does affect your appetite. I didn't realize that it causes water retention esp in gut area. I was on paxil for 10 years and I have gained 40 lbs. Once when I thought that my neuropathic pain was under control I went off paxil and easily lost 15 lbs but the pain returned and I had to go back on Paxil. Finally, I switched to cymbalta because am desperate to lose weight. Almost all of it is on my stomach. I look 8 months pregnant. I never thought that gabapentin could be a cause. I am going to try to go off of it and see what happens.
I am terrified of the pain returning. I have CIPN (chemo induced periphial neuropathy) with intense constant pain unless treated. Brain fog for sure but I knew that -- most common kind is with word finding--different from the fog from chemo brain.
You take tramadol for breakthrough pain. How do you do that?
It caused me to studder and I was off balance in addition to the weight gain so yes its true it causes weight gain my endo told me to get off ASAP. now tramadol didnt help with the pain cymbalta made me have a really bad reaction. I am yet to get any relief of my chronic pain.
Dear jebnow,
I started out taking gabapentin with no weight gain or problems at all. When my doctor increased it, however, I did notice a little swelling in my hands and feet, but had no weight gain at all. Hope this helps. Ruth
Hello jebnow. Rajive is correct. Weight gain is not associated with taking Gabapentin. I went, did reading, etc and found only this and it really isn't a solid answer, but found that in clinical studies/trials that in regards to fluid retention, in the arms, legs, hands and feet, that happened up to 8.3% of the users. Aside from this, theres nothing that I could find. I went through five different sites along with our site and nothing. Its a problem that your doctor should beaware of because the Gabapentin seems to be the culprit. The FDA has a site where you can log on, and register whats happening/ed to you when/while taking the drug. Best wishes to you, pledge
Thanks for the reply! I appreciate it. I have heard from many other people
on different sites and from some Doctors' that say weight gain is a DEF
problem for some people with Gabapentin.
I did find that on most websites , when you look for side effects from Gabapentin, that weight gain is listed. I guess it boils down to how each person reacts to the medicine??
I will still talk to my Dr about it though. He already wants me to have a Thyroid test done too. So we'll see.
Thanks again and take care,
Jul
You're welcome and have a great weekend bye bye then, pledge
Hi all. I have noticed that the less (dose age wise) I take of gabapentin , the more weight I lose. I have lost approx 20 pounds since cutting down the dose. I'm back to a relatively healthily weight now. I can even wear clothes I haven't been able to wear since my late 20s!
Idk whether or not gabapentin causes weight gain or fluid retention etc.. Either way I thank all for their input! :-)
Weight gain is a common problem/side affect with gabapentin. Any site you go to regarding gabapentin side affects will list "weight gain". Not all people will gain weight while taking gabapentin but many do.
I did gain 30 pounds but I was on the rotten for a couple years I stopped it and lost all the weight I'm down to 157.3 from 184 so it does put weight on you 3% of people will gain a lot of weight
