Hey! PPIs can cause some lower back pain, I experience that as well. I had a bunch weird side effects from the PPIs. I tried nexium, prilosec all of which I could not stand the side effects. I am now taking Prevacid which isn't as bad.
I did find that there are people who experience what you are experienceing.

"Omeprazole Side Effects - for the Professional
Additional adverse reactions that were reported with an incidence equal or greater than1% included acid regurgitation (1.9%), upper respiratory infection (1.9%), constipation (1.5%), dizziness (1.5%), rash (1.5%), asthenia (1.3%), back pain (1.1%), and cough (1.1%)."
I do have one suggestion: Have you tried Prevacid? I do not find that can cause what you are experiencing. It is a simular medication. You might talk to your doctor about it. If your doctor wants to hassle you. Ask for a sleep study. Now that will prove you have the problem with your back throughout the night. It all will be in the report to your doctor.
I wish you the best.
Thanks itsmetoo2, Yes I've tried prevacid and had a worse problem with that and back pain. I think maybe omepraxole being a ganeric to prevacid is what's giving me the problems. I'm going to see if I can get back on Aciphix.
Does anyone know WHY this drug causes backpain?
Very good question. I had just found that it causes back pain.
As for the question before your's "Generic" is the same medication as the brand name, but it is the inert ingredients used in the compounding (putting the pill together). So I doubt that it would really make a difference. But if you were a patient of seizures then you do not buy generic. As the Generic disolves at a different rate than the brand
Very interesting. I've also been using Omeprazole for about 6 years due to heartburn, Gerd as a result of a hiatal hernia. I have had back pain for about 2 years. I've had MRI's, physical therapy, drug treatment, Chiropractor and nothing works. I get up and walk around in the morning and it's gone. It usually wakes me up in the night so it's hard to get a good night's sleep. I've also changed beds taken also sorts of different medications. They believe it's a muscle spasm. Cyclobenzaprine worked after taking it about 2 weeks and it came back. I injured my back once lifting something wrong and used heat and it went away for a few days. I also may try a different medication since I have been on this one for so long.
I am missing the CYP2D6 allele and cannot metabolize this medication and it caused horrific damage long term.
