... since roughly 2001. Medicare switched me to a new plan for 2013, since my old plan's prices have gone way up (I get extra help, due to finances, so money IS a big issue). Unfortunately, my new plan does not cover Advair, and I'm clueless as to what else will work in maintaining the status quo of my lungs. I only have a pain mgmt doctor presently, and he is happy to prescribe my asthma medication for me... I just don't have any idea what I should request to replace my Advair! I just can't afford to get a second doctor, pay the additional co-pay for office visits, etc
What is a good substitute for Advair? I've been taking Advair successfully for adult-onset asthma?

I'm not quite clear on how medicare just up and changed you without your input. Its pretty stupid for them to pick a plan that won't help you. My part d covers advair, with a 35 copay. Its a cheap plan too. Have you tried to get help from the manufacturer with it?
I agree. I assume you are on a Medicare Advantage Plan and it is illegal for them to switch you without you approving the new plan. If your old plan was no longer an option, you should have been provided with info on new plans for you to choose-they cannot just choose one for you. The Medicare Advantage Plan business is highly competitive.
The plan I was on raised their prices, so I couldn't use them anymore. There were only two choices in my area that work with the "extra help" plan. I can't afford to pay for a prescription plan, so I get the much needed, but limiting, "extra help." Neither of those plans pay for Advair, but they DO pay for all my other meds, so I had to make a choice and just suck it up!
It is SO hard to be a Goddess without money! I am forced to be subservient to the ALL POWERFUL MEDICARE formularies. It feels like a big slap in my Royal face, to have a government agency control what medications I can take! Alas, I am a Goddess in a very poor kingdom. Won't some Knight in shining armor come and ease my distress?
I sympathize - I'm on this blog for the same reason. My private insurer changed the drug insurer and all the coverages changed with it. My Advair more than doubled the copay and pretty much eliminated my chance to stay on Advair. However, as someone already stated, Albutera is now very cheap - even without insurance. You don't have to go out of the country, just online. The real problem is that Advair covers far more symptoms, and Glaxo knows it.

Glaxo Smith Kline has a patient assistance foundation but to get the grant, you have to have spent $600 the year you aplly.
OMG my copay is 100.00 a month...
I'm on the Spireva and Advair 500/50... but since I am so accustomed to breathing, I really want to continue... My copay for Advair is $100 and much higher for Spreva... I have to mail order my medications or my insurance won't pay... I have to get the Spireva 3 months at a time... For two scripts yesterday was $247.00...
I am wondering what plan it is that you have? I am presently on AARP United Health Care Medicare and my copay is $47 a month
Hi lil guineapigslave, I share your frustration. I also hate the powdered inhalants but that's another matter. I have resorted to buying my inhalers
(Albuterol (sp)? :( and Flovent) because they are so incredibly expensive now. The maintenance med is the bigger problem, you're right!
I collect them in France now and I'm probably on some kind of International Inhalers Smuggling List. :)) My ins formulary covers only the rescue med as well.
Wish I had a better answer. I too will be looking to see what replies you get for this good question! Hope you're feeling OK these days. How are the pigs??
Hello to you too dear pledge!
Love from your friend,
4N Substances
Well, 4N, the only thing for me to do now is invite myself to come with you next time you travel to the other side of the pond ;-) I need inexpensive maintenance inhalers and it sounds like France is the way to go! My guinea pigs would LOVE to see France, although they are rather afraid that someone will mistaken them for an animal delicacy and they will be forced to use their awesome ninja-pig skills!
Bwa-haa-haa! What a great image that conjured up-you always make me laugh!! I'm very careful what I eat there to be sure!! We have horses, mini donkeys and mini goats in the US (as well as 14 resuced parrots in our aviary:)) Imagine my surprise to see that in some Provençal locales, donkey sausage and horse sausage is still made-nooooo! ! Luv ya GPS. If I hear more ill let you know. Best of luck with this transition. Thanks for the smile.
Dear 4N,
Did you know that advair now comes in an inhalant form in addition to the powder version? Just thought I'd share!
Lisa
NO!! Horse and donkey sausage? The french really like their meat, don't they? I had horses and I would NEVER sell them to the killers! If I put that in my mouth, I'd... never mind.
Maybe they'll grind up people next and make us into sausage?
No offense meant to French people, it's just what they are used to. But jeez, how cruel.
Sorry that I've no info for you my hilarious and literary friend!! If I find anything out about inhalants, I shall let you know, immediately if not sooner!
Ahh Mac, you know you can find just about anything in the good ole USA. They do do that to people, but you have to go to prison if they catch you...
Lisa
4N Substances... you made me cringe at the thought of donkeys and horses being used for food... BLECH! I'm way into animal welfare and I try not to eat any animals AT ALL, if I can possibly avoid it! It breaks my heart to think that donkeys, horses, dogs, cats, and monkeys are eaten in various parts of the world. And let's not forget pigs... they are as intelligent as a 6 year old human child, and they are good problem solvers and will bond with their favorite human, if given the chance! How can any of these creatures end up on a plate? Same thing with cows, deer, poultry, etc. It's hard for me to eat anything with a face.
But I digress. Lara, I know you will be on the lookout for me, you sweet thang! Even though it's hard for you to "look" at all, with your oozy eyes! Double BLECH!
Time to go to sleepynights! it is 7:30AM and Jeff is giving me the evil eye... on weekends he expects to spend at least an hour sleeping with me in the morning, before he gets up!
Calmez-vous mes amies! It's not being done much these days-there's no line forming at the guy's stand selling
d-n-k-y (<~~~ doesn't even want to say it now!) but I wouldn't buy a single thing from him, don't worry. These days the store front signs ( butcher depicting a horse head-ouch) are more often sought as they are highly collectible. They have all but disappeared.
Ah well, this is why I I have 14 parrots, 5 dogs, 4 mini donkeys, 4 mini goats, ducks, horses, a pony etc, many of whom are rescues. We can't right all the wrongs in this world, but we try to do our part. Glad I distracted the group for a moment from pain and discomfort-I love to do that!! :) Love to all of you!
4N :) Big Hugs
O thank you 4nSubstances and GuineaPigSlave, for indeed distracting me from my fibrofrickin'myalgia pain and the on-fire pain of my eye balls (it went away yesterday for a while), you both deserve The Humour (ok, "Humor") Award, for you made us (I'm assuming) giggle, and for that I adore the both of you and shall follow you, to read your witty missives til my dying day!!
P.S. I loathe monkeys, so I don't care if the french want to make mince meat of monkey meat... ok, not apes, nor chimps, nor those little...
OH FORGET THE MONKEYS, no eating monkeys, they can speak via sign language, nothing that speaks (all animals speak) should be a delicacy.
GPS, you really ARE making me detest the flesh I put on the table, nightly!!
But His Highnass expects pounds of roasted/broiled/braised flesh on his table, so what is a gurl to do? I could give him tofu, tell him it's chicken!
(perhaps we should start a vegetarian Q? OK, I'll start it... )
Lara... to answer that question is easy. Jeff eats humanely raised and slaughtered beef, chicken, and turkey, and stays FAR away from pig products. After reading a couple of articles on the intelligence of pigs, sausage just didn't attract his taste buds anymore! I eat lots of black beans and brown rice, veggie corn dogs, quinoa, edamame, hummus, and goat cheese, etc. Basically, two separate menus, but we can still eat together as mine are quick fixes. He doesn't like my vegetarian foods, so I don't have to worry about him leaving me high and dry! Down! Down! Down! Go! Go! Go! Mine! Mine! Mine! (to quote Daffy Duck)
Lara, and anyone else interested... going vegetarian has been the best thing I could have done for my body! For the first time in my LIFE... since I was THREE... I am NOT CONSTIPATED! And what constipates the body, ultimately constipates the mind. I feel closer to animals, and don't feel ashamed anymore when I see a cow or goat and pet its head. That's some pretty powerful stuff!
Indeed, 'tis powerful. I'd forgotten about the intelligence of swine!
Oh gurl, that's IT, sistah, I'm now joining your ranks, I shall be only a lowly foot-soldier in vegetarianism, you are our Colonel, and I shall blindly follow.
Lara
P.S. like 4NSubstances, I wish we could call you something other than GuineaPigSlave. I've shortened it to GPS, and want to shorten 4NSubstances to 4N, yet lack her approval to do so.
I'm Frenchie! That's easy right? I don't think any of us who stumbled in various conditions onto this site chose a name to use with FRIENDS-I know I wasn't thinking about that at the time! I do love gps though. :))
Love,
Frenchie
You all can call me Erica! Or Goddess Erica, if you don't think it will insult your favorite deity.
I have the same problem my asthma was well managed with advair and the old proventil after some years of serious problems. First they took away the proventil that worked so well and switched me to pro air (does not work as well) I am now on ventolin and it seems to be better, BUT losing my advair really threw me for a loop. We tried Dulera and it did not seem to work as well but that may be because for the first time in my life I was in ER with my asthma and high blood pressure (never had that before in my life). If they think they are saving money that was not cheap. Had some advair given to me from someone whose mother died and had some left over. But now I'm back to trying dulera again. Anyone else here using dulera? On another note I love your posts. We have guinea pigs love them best pets ever and parrots. No minature donkeys but sure wish I did and love little goats too. So settle for ducks and chickens outside and our little rescue dogs]

Wow, I answered this, but it's not showing, but after reading your response to Pledge, I'm not sure. You must have a different formulary than I do. (Just started Part D jan. 1st) We have a secondary too, & Spriva is listed as a tier 2, & so is Symbicort . Albuterol is listed as a tier 1 in my book...
Hello guineapigslave. I have COPD. Several years ago I switched from Advair to Spiriva. (In my case the Spiriva works better for me) Regards pledge
Thanks for your input, Pledge! Unfortunately, Spiriva isn't in the formulary either... I previously checked that one out :-( After looking at the formulary, it appears that any asthma maintenance meds that ARE approved are a tier 4. I guess Medicare doesn't CARE about maintaining health... they just want to treat emergency asthma symptoms... Albuterol is REAL cheap! Ugh!
albuterol is a good sub..but it depends on the person and what works for you..
and what your insurance covers...
Check out CanadaDrugs.com where you will find a generic equivalent manufactured in England. (I suspect the British are pretty careful about drugs like the U.S.) The cost is about 60% of GSK's prices. Just search their website for Advair and you'll find the alternatives. I've ordered from CanadaDrugs several times and find them reliable, trustworthy and responsive. (The cost for my Advair 500/50 Rx just jumped from $47 per month to $222 because of the donut hole.)
part d is not part of medicare. part d is run exclusively by the insurance companies and medicare can't even negotiate the prices you are charged, law was passed in 2007 by republican president and congress. what we call a sweetheart deal.
