Diabetics and many people in general are deficient in the B vitamins. I've known several people who have had a decrease in neuropathy pain by consistently taking a high quality B-complex with all 8 essentials and getting B12 injections.

Gabapentin initially was an anti-seizure medication.
However, it was found to have good effects for neuropathic (nerve) pain which is what you have.
Dosing is started at lower amounts and gradually increased until the patient feels in control like the numbness and tingling you described.
It’s a different kind of pain relief than obtained with opioids without the drugged sluggish feeling.

Don’t be discouraged if you feel like it’s not working. You just may need a higher dose.
There are other meds that provide neuropathic pain relief like Lyrica ($$$). I had no relief from the Lyrica so more expensive isn’t always better.
Be patient.
However, if you feel like things aren’t progressing fast enough, don’t wait until your next appointment. Call your doctor so he is aware and may increase it without a visit.

If you are researching this drug, remember what I said about the anti-seizure treatment course because those doses may start out quite a bit higher.
The squeaky wheel gets the grease so stay on top of it with your doc.
One other fact...
These drugs do affect brain chemistry so watch for any changes in behavior. Best would be to tell a family member that you are on a new drug and you would appreciate it if they notice any changes to let you know.

It seems I got a little impulsive which didn’t make me think of the medication (high doses).
I discovered EBay auctions for the first time. I bid constantly on a drive from Philly to Chicago non-stop. 6 months later I had no room for anything else.
I got off the drug and within a month I lost all desire to win those auctions!
