My dog was booked in to be euthinased at the vet clinic. She was prescribed gabapentin for me to give to her 4 hours before the appt to help with her anxiety of vets. She weighs 22pounds and was given a dose of 1200mg (4x300mg capsules). This dose completely knocked her out and i was unable to take her for a last ever walk before the appt, she was limp, i had to carry her.
Does this dose seem extremely high for a little dog with mild anxiety?
Extremely high dose of gabapentin give to dog?

Hi, BIllie Bee!
I'm so sorry for your loss and I know exactly how you're feeling as my own dog was euthanized just this morning. It's a devastating feeling to lose such a good friend and companion.
The standard dose for pain relief in dogs is 5-10mg/kg every eight hours (22lbs = 10kg) which may not cause much sedation in most dogs, but the dose you were given certainly would.
I'm so sorry that this happened to you and I hope you can comfort knowing that your dog didn't suffer.
Hello Billie Bee:
I'm so sorry to hear of this situation. I have become convinced myself that our pets have souls and can become our soulmates. Yes, 1200 mg is a very high single dose of gabapentin - even for humans. In fact, it is the highest single dose recommended for humans as the maximum daily dose for humans is 3600 mg administered as 1200 mg X 3 per day.
Sorry for your loss. Take care for now.
