How does Endari work to treat sickle cell disease?

Official Answer by Drugs.com 20 Sep 2017

Endari from Emmaus Medical Inc. is an orally administered pharmaceutical grade L-glutamine, an amino acid, for treatment of sickle cell disease. Sickle cell disease is an inherited disorder which leads to crescent, or "sickle" shaped red blood cells that limit oxygen delivery and leads to severe pain and organ damage.

Endari works by increasing the amount of glutamine in the blood. The added glutamine is taken up by the defective sickle cells, and when metabolized (broken down) results in the release of antioxidants. These antioxidants lower stress on the sickle cell, help free them up for oxygen delivery to organs and other tissues in the body, and lessen pain and swelling.
