I have narcolepsy so I take medicines to help keep me awake during the day. I also have anxiety & a couple different as needed prescriptions for that, alprazolam & clonidine (newer script). I rarely take them because they make me even more sleepy & slow than I already am). I have a chance to try taking them regularly for a few days w/o having to worry about the side effects. I was just wondering what the difference between them is. Like, what are they made of? How do each work, what do they target in the body/brain & how? Do they have different effects? How long they typically take to work, & how long do they work? Both are tablets & lowest doses.
What is the difference between Xanax and Alprazolam? How are they different?

Personally I always preferred brand, how ever with cost of todays medication's this is no longer realistic. Greenstone Alprazolam comes as close to brand there is, in fact there's hardly any difference if any at all. Many of the other generic's fall short in my opinion by being weaker. Some people can't tell a difference. Greenstone being the best generic and Actavis being close.
There is no difference, Xanax IS Alprazolam.
If you are talking about alprazolam and Xanax, they are the same exact thing. One is name brand and is a little bit more effective than the other one. The Xanax is name brand and will cost you alot of money to fill and is a bit stronger as it is name brand. I've been on them (alprazolam for 30 yrs) and they will definitely make you sleepy until you've been taking them for a few years. I hope that helped a little bit.
However if you're talking about clonidine vs. xanax/alprazolam, the clonidine is to lower your blood pressure and by doing so relaxes you. I also tried that one and my pressure got too low so I stopped plus it did not work for anxiety at all!
Alprazolam is the way to go but very addictive and if you happen to take them on a daily basis, getting off is impossible. I have withdrawal grand mal seizures if I go one day without one. I advise you to be careful with the use in them and only take when needed.
