Can I cut the metformin 1000 mg in half to take 500 mg instead of having to buy a new perscription?

Definitely not, if you need the 1000mg to control your blood sugar. If the dr didn't order 500 mg, then you can't cut it. If you google metformin discounts, you will find coupons that bring the cost down to around 12.
