I was prescribed Lexapro 20mg a while back and stopped taking it because I was a really dumb kid. I have really bad anxiety and a terrible fear of being sick (emetophobia) so I've been looking to start taking it again. However, I know that taking 20mg straight away will probably give me awful side effects.
The pill itself has a score line down the middle so I would assume it's safe to cut in half, I just want to know if cutting it in half will make the dosage 10mg rather than 20mg? Which would in turn lessen the side effects. As I'm absolutely terrified of being sick, but I know I just can't live like this anymore with all the panic attacks I'm having every day.

Hello. Cutting a pill in half (any pill) will not be exactly 50/50 in percentage because of the many different fillers there might be in the compound and how they are distributed within. It'll probably be close enough in general. With that being said, how long have you been without your medicine and why did you discontinue in the first place? Was this done under a health care professionals supervision? And lastly, what are you going to say to your perscriber when it comes time to get a refill? Franky, I'd just go to him/her and receive their professional guidance. It's ALWAYS prudent, when it comes to self medicating, NOT to and get professional guidance. ALWAYS! Best regards, Kevin.

Thank you! :) And it has been a little while, possibly a few months? I'm not entirely sure as I don't have the best memory. And no, I had stopped taking them without telling anybody, for some stupid reason I'd convinced myself that I didn't need the help of medication and had decided to take myself off of them slowly. Looking back on it I really don't know /why/ I did that but now I gotta fix that.
I'll have to look into asking them, thank you!

@sketchii. Don't feel stupid... many people stop their meds because they feel better and think they don't need the medication anymore. It's true for some people but for folks like us we do need to keep taking it or our symptoms will recur. I hope you feel better quickly!

Right, you're not stupid. At least you were smart enough to get off of them SLOWLY. Smart in that regard. Now just tell Dr. the truth and you'll be on the way to wellness!
