I’m sorry to hear that you have been struggling. Lexapro is one of the medications used to treat anxiety and depression. I was on it for 11 years nearly 14 years ago.
It is not uncommon to experience side effects during the first few weeks of starting medication. For some people ( myself included) things can seemingly feel worse before they feel better. For others ( like my daughter!) they suffer no side effects and feel better within days.
I personally found the review comments here extremely comforting, Especially during the first six weeks. It was good to read that other people had experienced similar side effects to what I was feeling.
There is a real stigma with mental health and medication. Although I was on Lexapro for 11 years I felt so much better than I had before starting and did a lot of work to help me manage my anxiety better. I spent the last few years on a low dose of 5mg and the final two years on 2mg. When I eventually came off I stayed off medication for three years. All my blood test and health checks remained normal throughout that time.
Unfortunate due to several personal events I succumbed once again to anxiety and started medication eight weeks ago. I tried to fight it ‘naturally’ for twelve months but it got to the stage that I could barely function. I personally think the health risk are higher NOT being treated than any potential risk from medication. I truly wasn’t living I was just existing prior to medication.
Please keep in contact with your doctor throughout the first few weeks. Trust in the process, it will take time and for most people that’s between 4-6 weeks before they feel improvement.
Did you go back on the Lexapro?
No, my doctor put me on a different medication this time, Zoloft. Because I was on lexapro for a long time she felt it would be good to start a new medication this time.
