Is this something that you take for two weeks to "Waken up the nerves" again? Or do you have to take the drug indefinitely to make sure BMS doesn't flare back up?

The answer depends on whether or not you have "Primary/Idiopathic BMS" or whether you have 'Secondary BMS". Secondary BMS can have a number of different causes that can be treated and condition can be resolved. However, Primary/Idiopathic BMS is caused from damaged nerves to the mouth according to Orofacial Pain Specialists (Dentists) and this type cannot be cured/resolved. If you have the Primary form of BMS, Clonazepam or Diazepam are 2 medications that have been tested and studied the most, hands down, in BMS Research with the best results for pain reduction (not a cure). These two benzodiazepines help slow down nerves that are overactive, misfiring due to nerve damage. I take Diazepam every 12 hours daily for the past 8 years. No it does not cure my BMS pain, however, it does keep my pain "level" at a Lower level than before I began taking it. There is no known cure for Primary/Idiopathic BMS. However, it is different with Secondary BMS because different medical issues such as GI Reflux can be treated with different medication and stop the BMS. If Herpes Simplex virus is the cause of Secondary BMS, it can be cured with Antiviral medication. Treatment of BMS depends on which form you have. For the Primary/Idiopathic form which Clonazepam is commonly used, many dentists/doctors also add anti-seizure medication like Gabapentin/Neurontin, Lyrica and/or others to the Clonazepam. Getting the correct diagnosis is extremely important because the list of causes for BMS is very long and without the correct diagnosis, a person cannot get the appropriate treatment. If you have Primary/Idiopathic BMS, you don't have to continue taking Clonazepam as long as you can live 24/7 with the pain. In the 8 years I've had Idiopathic BMS, my oral burning has never stopped.
I have taken that for extended lengths of time and it didn’t work. My BMS has been going on for 3 years. No one has research everything is trial and error. But you are trying to deaden the nerves, not wake them up. They are awake with BMS.
