I was placed in a mental facility for a month and they had me on hydroxyzine. I was put on 25mg for the first 3 nights and then after that they bumped me up to 50mg randomly one night. That night i went to go lay down in my bed and i needed water so i went back out to the nurses station to get some. Well when i walked back to my room i felt a weird indescribable feeling and the next thing I know i fell onto the back side of a couch. Nobody saw me so i just got back up and got in my bed but I was so drowsy that I could barely walk to make it there without stumbling. So there’s a very real possibility that he could have been trying to abuse the drug for those effects. I’m not a doctor just a kid that got put through the wringer with mental health medication.
gatsby801 isn’t technically correct. Benadryl can make you high. when taking over 10 of them you can get hallucinations and stumble to walk. at a certain point it makes it so you can’t sleep. i’m not 100% sure but i think all antihistamines have the potential to give you some sort of high
I was prescribed hydroxyzine, and at one point have taken 20 50mg tablets all at once. I had started shaking uncontrollably, my pupils were extremely dilated, and I could barely walk, it felt as if I had an extreme high and was walking on clouds everytime I took a step because of how light my legs had felt, I also had unsteady breathing, and my eyes had stayed wide open the entire time
I get this prescribed for anxiety. I have, at one point, taken 8 (I don't want to be lectured, it was a stupid thing to do but I did it nonetheless) and literally just went to sleep. No crazy head feeling, no high. My anxiety is mild and situational usually, so I feel like somebody who had zero anxiety would still not have a high from this drug.
I take hydroxyzine 25 mg 4 times a day for extreme anxiety and PTSD also Zoloft for anxiety and PTSD I be sleepy through the day and not even realized I fell asleep. So be careful taking it
I’ve been prescribed hydroxyzine. I take 100 mg at night and 50 mg in the morning and my doctor permitted me to take extra during the day if needed. I have anxiety and it does help with it. Unfortunately, when I was going through a rough time, I took the entire bottle and went to sleep. I woke up and started throwing up, but I never got high off of it. Although, there is four different types of hydroxyzine and four different chemical compounds and I take Vistaril. I can’t speak for the others but I can speak for Vistaril, which doesn’t get you high no matter how high of a dose you take. I would ask him why he’s taking it. But if he does take large doses consistently, he risks liver damage which can result in death. Never take pills from your friends, kids. Sincerely, an anxious 16 year old.
Yes this can be of abused lightly and causes drowsiness and sleepiness or sedation as part of the high but no euphoria and does not give you physical dependence but mental dependence if it is a likeable High I would definitely keep an eye out.
No
I was just prescribed hydroxyzine (Atarax), 25mg, for anxiety and it was a scary reaction for me. Within about 30min of taking 1 pill I was very mellow. It was like I couldn't stop smiling. Within an hour I was high-as-a-kite. 100% blasted out of my mind. Maybe another hour or two later I was dead on my face asleep.
I'm a regular drinker but I otherwise take no recreational drugs. Like, ever. This was a really frightening event for me.
My body is very sensitive to medication and it is not unusual for drugs to affect me more severally than other people but I did want to share my experience to show what an outlier effect may be. Be very careful when driving or operating machinery while on this drug. If I had gotten behind the wheel yesterday I would have been a serious threat to myself and others.
Anything and everything can get you "high" sorry to say this but its the truth.
I am prescribed this for sleep. It's basically a beefed-up version of Benadryl and you can't get high off of Benadryl. You can feel sleepy, but sleepy is not "high" or "stoned". Those are states of minds. This makes you sleepy. Also it clears you up in the process. Short answer is no, this pill can not be used to get "high" only sleepy (or to that affect hyper as some people react that way to this type of medication). But as said in previous comments it can be used to boost the highs of other more illicit substances.
Interesting comment from Wolverina? Nice buzz? Hydroxyzine acts like a stronger version of benadryl, an antihistamine. My doctor prescribed it to me for bedtime to help me sleep, per as needed.
Just calms the anxiety and helps treat insomnia. It is indicated mainly for anxiety and itching caused from an allergic reaction. Whatever floats your boat - big disappointment if looking for a "buzz"
It was prescribed by me for anxiety and all i get is mild euphoria or extremely sleepy. Sometimes i knock out for hours other times it gives a nice buzz on my day off.
I am currently on this and it does not cause a high and I also am a teenager in school and I know how kids can be. Confronting him will not be best but simply saying "Hey son, I found these in you laundry and I think we should talk about it if you are okay with that, I would like to know where you got these and what you are using them for." if your son is willing to talk about it great and if not I would not worry myself sick over it. Monitor what things he does and how he acts these types of drugs are used as a way to control mood, help you sleep and they can be used as a sedative or can be prescribed after surgery to help with sleep. When used for this is used in much higher doses. If you know the dosage or what color and shape it is you could do much research as I do with ever medicine before putting it into my body. Like I said talk to your son and don't be confrontational, calm and kind is your best bet!! I hope this helps you!!
Before assuming your son is on drugs for recreational use, consider the fact that he could have been confidently prescribed them and maybe do some research on it or talk to him about it. If you expect him to trust you and talk to you about it, then you need to trust him and not go through his things. I was prescribed hydroxyzine at 19 for panic attacks and depression. I asked the doctor not to tell my mother because I didn't want her to worry about me. It's also used to help with insomnia, allergies, stress, anxiety, depression, etc...
Of course the Dr. wouldn't tell your mom if you asked... You were 19.
Great comment
Agreed but just to point out, you don't need to be an invasive mother going through other people's things to find something in your son's (or husband's) pocket. All you need to do is wash their laundry. I've even found cell phones in the washing machine when I don't check the pockets of things they put in the laundry basket.
I don't think the original comment was made up of assumptions at all. If she a bottle, it's one thing. But she found loose pills in a pocket. That usually means he did not get it from his doctor. And by the way, why would you even ask your doctor not to tell your mom about your meds? Doctors and pharmacists have no right to discuss ANYTHING about your health without your consent, especially if you're an adult. That's like you asking the doctor not to tell me about your medical history. Unless your mother has power of attorney and/or you're incapacitated and the courts have ruled that you're incapable of making your own decisions when it comes to medicine due to a disease, disorder, or temporary incapacitation and assigned your mom to be the designed person to make any and all your medical decisions on your behalf, or unless you gave your doctor from consent the very beginning to tell your mommy everything, your doctor should be reported if YOU have to ASK him/her NOT to tell someone about your medical information.
