a friend in recent years has had lots of tooth decay. I recently read a drug counseling booklet given to a child at school during a drug prevention program and noticed the same pattern of decay on a methamphetamine user. I am wondering if this could cause the same thing with Adderall. The friend in earlier years had very good teeth and dental care. I don't know how long "friend" has been on Adderall.
Can Adderall cause severe tooth decay? Has anyone noticed this problem?

30 F here. I started taking Adderall when I was 21, I had perfect teeth, never had a cavity. It was life changing for me, my life was finally put together and everything was going great. 3 years in I started to get tooth pain. At 25, I had 2 teeth removed and since then I've lost an additional 7 teeth. I can no longer chew most foods, I can't chew vegetables or fruits I used to enjoy. Everything I eat needs to be soft. It's one of the worst things that has ever happened to me. I'm constantly worried I'm going to lose more teeth and live in constant agony due to my dental pain. My dentist has estimated it will cost me over 10,000$ to fix my smile and live normally again. I don't have any money and insurance covers next to nothing. If I had known that this was even a possibility when I was prescribed it I would never have started .
I was on 30 mg x a day for reference.
I was just reading this and I’m shocked. I have been on Adderall 15mg once a day. I need it to focus more at work. I am 45 and I’ve never had a cavity or any teeth issues other than braces as a kid. I’ve been on it for about a year now. I went to the dentist the other week because my front top tooth chipped. When they looked at it they said my front 4 teeth were hollowing out and will eventually break off. They told me the best plan is to have caps put on the front 4. I am in tear to think about this.
I have suffered with ADD since I was in 2nd grade... I struggled through school because the meds back then made you a zombie. Now as an adult I need it for my job to stay focused. I guess I am going to go load up on Biotin and pray it works.
mine are so bad i had no idea this was the actual cause. i mean i felt like maybe dry mouth came into play. no clue it was acid and no idea that this many people were suffering. i’m so scared and now i cannot stop worrying about what the future holds. i now feel like teeth falling out is imminent.
I've been on 10mg for a couple weeks now, about a week in I had terrible radiating tooth and gum pain out of nowhere on my lower right molar and had to have a root canal. Now my other side is starting to hurt. I do brush and floss regularly, is it my crowns or is it the Adderall? Also taking Trintellix
Hi, I am taking 30mg of Adderall 3 times a day for adult ADD for now going on 9 years and I had to have all my bottom teeth pulled out and I never had a cavity in my life and I always had good teeth and now my top teeth are starting to break in a blink of a eye and I also fibromyalgia and I have muscle spasms all day and night and I have joint problems in my fingers and I have numbness in the tips of my fingers and I have to put my hands under warm water in the morning so my fingers will bend and I can not tie my shoes or dress myself that well at all and I can not even hardly wash my hair by myself and I have been trying to look up what can be going on with me and I started looking up adderall side effects and I can not believe what I am reading on it and how it can damage a person's body and life and it works very well at what I am using it for but on the other hand it's damaging other parts of my body WOW!!!
so please keep me in mind if ya"ll find out something that can be done about what it has done to me that now I am fighting with every day because I can not afford to get dental work so I can eat like a normal person with all their teeth in their mouth Thanks,
Hi friend 4!
Oh boy. I'm taking 20 mg of the Big A twice daily, and my teeth have always been OK for the most part. I'm 75 now and have had minimum decay, so I pray God that a problem with decay doesn't develop. I'm a long-time vegetarian, and brush and floss religiously. I'd hate to find out that Adderall causes decay because the med just doesn't work with my ADHD; it also relieves my Fibromyalgia and Neuropathy pain and the Chronic Fatigue Syndrome which accompanies Fibromyalgia. If anyone has any feedback it'd be appreciated.
I took adderall for about 5 years and it caused severe dental problems. Three of my teeth complete broke off and rotten. I’m in the process of getting dental implants. Four others have been filled for cavities and one needed a crown. I know that it won’t be long before I have more issues but it is definitely 100 percent from adderall. I had constant dry mouth and no one warned me it could lead to tooth decay. The warning was not given by my doctor or on the label of the medication. I’ve spent over $15k fixing my teeth so far.
BTW...
I've been on Adderall for 15 years (30mg's / 120) & up until 4-5 years ago, I had beautiful teeth. I was modeling in Italy when they first began to chip off, & by the time I'd gotten back to the states to see a dentist, I had lost two (back) teeth.
Fast FWD to today, I've lost about 7 (either broke off or had to be pulled) & have had *extensive* dental work done on those remaining ($16,000+).
I still have 4 left on the bottom that need to be fixed (2 chipped/2 rotting out) then I'll likely need to get implants... It's been a NIGHTMARE :-X
My advice would be to just get remaining teeth removed... I wasted thousands of dollars trying to get my teeth fixed only to have them fall apart again after only a couple of years. Today I got my last 9 teeth removed and hoping I can afford dentures... I'm 37 years old.
My advice would be to quite wasting money getting your teeth fixed and just get them all pulled. I learned the hard way after sticking thousands of dollars into trying to "save" my teeth only to spend even more getting all my remaining teeth pulled and now having to try to save up for dentures. I payed several hundred dollars for my front teeth to be fixed after they had chipped only to get them pulled less than 2 years later because they were falling apart again. I have been on dextroamphetamine (one of the ingredients in Adderall )for several years, that was definitely the cause of my tooth decay.
I was on Adderall for 10 years 80 mg a day and after about six years using it my teeth begin to just break off at the gumline. I only have about three teeth left and I'm actually going to the dentist tomorrow to have all my teeth pulled to get Dentures and dental implants. I know that Adderall was the cause for my tooth loss it has been totally devastating embarrassing and traumatizing. I really hope a class-action lawsuit get started up because this was never listed as a side effect. Thank God I have been off Adderall for two years now it destroyed my life .
I have been on Adderall for over 23 years now and have never had even one cavity and still have all my teeth including 2 wisdom with no decay or cavities. I brush/floss and use mouth wash every day of my life from probably around 5-6 years old. Started Adderall at age 10 so I did notice when I was younger dry mouth so I learned to keep bottled water with me always. I eat properly, walk 5-10 miles daily, and have never had even one cavity so I am not buying any of this nonsense, it is clearly stated on the medication handouts that stimulants can cause dry mouth and should be common sense to anyone over the age of 14 to drink enough water and eat well in addition to practice proper personal hygiene. The reality is almost all dental health issues are a combination of genetics and lifestyle choices period.
This is just another reason for people that do not want to practice personal responsibility to cast blame on a miracle medication that helps millions live productive functional lives. I mean if I noticed the type of changes in my teeth you all or on about and Adderall was the only thing different in my life I would have thrown the medication away and never looked in its direction again.
Im sitting here listening to my daughters boyfriend cry in pain and disappointment. You see he is 22 and has been taking adderall for 4 years. He just got out of emengency surgery today to remove ALL of his teeth. My heart literally breaks to pieces for him. Im in tears with concern and worry. I wish i knew how to help him. Advice would be greatly appreciated.
Adderall could certainly contribute to tooth decay/poor oral health, I would think. Amphetamines can reduce a patient's appetite and thirst throughout the day, and as a result, result in the patient eating and drinking less frequently. Failing to consume an adequate amount of liquids throughout the day can leave the mouth short on saliva, and very dry. Prolonged periods of having a dry mouth can contribute to tooth decay, as saliva is necessary for oral hygiene. This would be in addition to any other factors that would contribute to poor oral hygiene.
I never had any dental problems until adderal .My teeth first became loose and I've lost all my teeth.Adderal 30 mg salts .
I was on adderall for only a little over a year and now I am down to 21 teeth and they all have to go. Spent thousands getting them removed because they are breaking off. I broke one in half opening a sauce packet so they are in horrible shape. Never had the problem before taking it. I was never aware it could cause this.
Within 2 years of being on adderall I began noticing a little bit of tooth decay on my bottom teeth that started at the gum and over time worked it's way up to the rest of the tooth. Piece by piece, chunk by chunk, enamel erosion. I actually started using the Biotene mouthwash at the first sign of dental problems. I kept a bottle in my car and at home and used it often as well as chewed sugar free Trident gum. Anyways, I've been on adderall for 6 years now and I have 7 nasty nubs for lower teeth and a few has a little enamel partially left on them but not many. They literally look like fence posts standing in mud. Oh and I don't have any upper back teeth. I'm 33 years old and I'm completely devastated because of my mouth. My whole personality and lifestyle has changed because of this. I want to get implants so bad but I can't afford it.
Dentures is the only thing I can afford at the moment but I can't convince myself to get them just yet because the thought of having dentures at the age of 33 screws with me mentally and emotionally in a way I never knew something could. I have researched for a case many times over the years concerning this situation and never came across anything. I wonder if enough people spoke up about this then maybe something could eventually happen??? Maybe I'm just wishful thinking. I have an appointment with an attorney next week so hopefully things will look up after that. Fingers crossed!!
My 21 year old daughter had never even had a cavity in her life! Six months after starting Adderall, she has 9 cavities!!! Did you speak with an attorney??
"Within 2 years of being on Adderall I began noticing a little bit of tooth decay on my bottom teeth... " and wasn't it may be a great idea to STOP taking it all together or anything even similar to it?
YES, IT CAN CAUSE TOOTH DECAY BUT THE COMPANY BACK WHEN IT CAME OUT THAT WAS NOT A SIDE EFFECT AND IT STILL HAS NOT BEEN UPDATED TO MY NOLAGE. And many people have had this problem since it came out the best you can do is make sure everyone brushes extra well and also if the mouth is too dry use some of that liquid mouth lubricant Biotene gum or rinse works well and make sure you keep up with your dentist. best of luck to you all
