I started taking Buspar about 1 week ago today. My psychiatrist said I am very sensitive to medications so she started me on a very low dose. I started taking 2.5 mg once in the mornings, the first 5 days I felt on top of the world! Then she told me I could add a second dose in the afternoon. Yesterday was day 6 and I had the worst anxiety the entire day, chest tightness and shortness of breath, heart palpitations, everything! Didn’t sleep at all the entire night. Today is day 7 and my psychiatrist told me to go back to taking just 1 dose in the mornings. Has this happened to anyone? I’m so sad, I feel like as if it stopped working suddenly. Did I jinx myself?
Buspar, is the first week the easy one?

Hi there, I agree with WildcatVet, great explanation.
This may be repetitive, but wanted to just add, Buspar, can absolutely, demonstrate an initial response, six or seven days into therapy. The effectiveness, as the drug level or amount of drug, available to the brain, to continue to produce more positive/therapeutic response, reducing your specific symptoms experienced, should decrease. It can take up to six weeks to provide full therapeutic effect and overall, relief of extreme symptoms experienced.
Best Wishes, Cindy
Hi, vcarrillo!
It's very common to experience new or increased side effects when upping your dosage... and you doubled your dose.
Your doctor is dropping your dose so your system has more time to adjust to the medication. It just takes time and that's okay.
You may even find that the lower dose works effectively to control your symptoms; if not you can always raise your dose later on.
What you felt were "normal" side effects that some people have when first starting a medication especially if you're sensitive. So relax and let things be for now.
Best regards and don't worry too much about this.
Wow that makes a lot of sense, thank you so much for taking the time to reply to my question. Reading your reply gave me such peace of mind. I’ve been stressing out about this all day, don’t want to lose hope on this drug. Thank you so much for explaining this to me, I really appreciate your help !
You're welcome!
BTW, I just want to add that I've taking buspirone (generic BuSpar) for over three years now and I'm very happy with the results.
