I have been suffering from anxiety and depression for 2 years now, It is driving me crazy and I would like to end it all. I have been on various anti depressants and none have worked. They just seem to make me tired. I can't eat sometimes and have lost 35 lbs. I'm a walking bone rack. The Dr gave me an RX for prozac 3 weeks ago and I had it filled but am scared to start taking it.Can anyone help me decide with their opinions. I am to start at 10 mg a day.
Did anyone find prozac made them more anxious?

Fluoxetine is not a first line antidepressant for Anxiety.
In fact it does not have a labelled use for anxiety. Only for depression & panic attacks. It is one of the most stimulating and activating antidepressants and is therefore likely to exacerbate general or social anxiety and agitation in the general population, although some people do get an anti-anxiety response.
Citalopram or Paroxetine are the first line antidepressants more suitable for anxiety.
Sertraline sits between the two, it has more of a therapeutic effect on anxiety than Fluoxetine but can also be too stimulating for some.
Anxiety is one of the side effects at the beginning. My doctor and pharmacist told me to wait 2 months until it starts working. Once it works it becomes a life saver and a miracle worker. Hang in there. It will get better.
Hi roxithefox
How are you going with the Prozac now? I'm day 15 on 20mg and still struggling especially in the mornings.
Fluoxetine is an upper serotonin uplifting medication sometimes is hard to know what cause the Chemical imbalance in the brain , alprazolam have dual action relax and up lift but have been abused , as benzo family , I use fluoxetine only when needed but do give you headache and possible anxiety, do some aerobics walk for example read the bible in some encouraging scriptures are have real power , try to relax , to much chemicals no good for anyone ,avoid expecting perfection of yourself , this will fix depression use magnesium as MAGMIN AND B6 have same effects chamomile tea , enjoy life , doctors give medicines they do not take them , your body is tg doctor , your body will decide if this chemical is for you , try 10 MG if make you anxious stop it , I found xanax 1 MG relaxing with good control I use no alcohol or smoke avoid those beware of alcohol is not digested,
and found someone who can trust and talk remember defeat is a state of mind , no one is ever defeated unless defeat accepted as a reality , brain chemistry is complex like thyroxine hormone you feel no matter what you take , some times your body say yes , sometimes say no , obey the doctor your body talks to you , reverse psychology may help , smile ask why I fell this way ? Big deal I fix it tomorrow, do something else , if I have headache I take panadol , is that good ? I do not know , or travel to a good hospital and say doctor help me thank you the Decision you make to help yourself do nthe anxiety remember your body is a 12 sysrem network complex drink lots of water lots Breath deep left be in it ,. God bless
Yes!!Never have I experienced so much anxiety. Been on prozac 20 mg. Just over a month. It's like I can't be in my own skin. Going to doc today. I can't function.
Hi Beverleya,
I am in a hurry and didn't get a chance to read the answers you got, but want to add something real quick. I take Prozac right now, but not for depression, for chronic pain.
I had the same "type:" of depression you have, at one time in my life though and the meds that helped, REALLY helped were Xanax for panic attacks and Nortriptyline, which is an old tricyclic antidepressant. Sometimes the older, tried and true meds will get the job done better than the newer ones!
I sincerely hope you find something, I also couldn't eat for quite a while and was a bag o' bones, too. This combination really helped!
Wishing you happier and healthier days ahead,
Lara
Hi Mac!! How ya been girl?
Question - I just started taking Nortriptyline for sleep. I took it many yrs ago and have forgot what it is good for besides depression? I also have severe neuropathy, and have heard that nortriptyline helps with chronic pain so I was wondering if it helped relieve some of your pain?
Thanking you in advance incase I dnt get right back... your friend pamee
Lara you have been a great help... thank you... Nortriptyline is probably the only anti depressant I haven't tried. I googled it and it is also good for pain which I have... 2 back surgeries...
Today is day 8 for the prozac. I'm really spaced out... sleepy... feel like I have a fever... and having trouble sleeping. Will all this go away when my system becomes accustomed to it?
Does the xanax make you tired?
So glad to hear you are feeling better and thank you for your good wishes
Bev
Hello. Try it. You will know soon enough. In the mean time, stay in touch with the doctor. Drink some of those protein shakes if you like them. I got used to Glucerna and it did help. With severe weight loss, unless you have an eating disorder, you can be eating anything you want. Have a donut, eat a hamburger, ice cream. Anything you want. Put some joy back into your life.
I would like to know if they checked you for diabetes? Drink lots of water as well. Have you seen the doctor since you lost the weight? Are you seeing a therapist to get you through this time? Sometimes sharing with someone on this site will also help the anxiety. People are anonymous and we share privately as well as open questions. Help is here. Something can be done.
Also be sure you have a complete blood work up to make sure something else is not going on. They will figure this out. You can make this happen. Karen
Thank you again for the replies.I've been seeing my G.P. regularly over this 2 year period and think he is at his ropes end too. Like I said I've tried many anti depressants and they just put me to sleep. I'm on ativan at bedtime. All my blood work and tests have been done and are normal. At times when I am really suffering I can't eat anything and nothing appeals to me... Even foods I really use to like. I'm even off coffee which is a wonder. I took a prozac soon as I read all the replies so will continue and see what happens. Any more info would be greatly appreciated.Sharing info really helps.
Here I am again,,, I'm on day 6 of Prozac. My Dr told me to take it in the a.m. I would walk around all day feeling spacy and the anxiety seemed worse than before I started taking it. So yesterday I took it at bedtime and was up half the nite. Very unusual for me. Today I feel like I've been hit over the head with a hammer. Just in la la land. Can anyone help me?
My anxiety and depression started with menopause. My first medication was Prozac. It was a life saver for me. Like everything else it takes awhile to get into your system. Exercise helps - walking. Counseling also helped me a
lot, still does.
Hello Beverleya,
My experience with prozac was it gave me anxiety, and at the time I was having daily panic attacks, so my psych dr. gave me another antidepressant for a couple of months to get me stable then I went back on prozac. Give it about 4 weeks and see how you're feeling and if you're still feeling anxious let your dr. know... hope you feel better soon... pamee
It can help anxiety. You have to get it in your system and that means you have to be patient for a month. It can raise your anxiety at first, but this goes away after a few weeks.
Thank you so much. I am at my ropes end. Dr started me at 19 mg because of my low weight.
DOC TOLD ME TODAY PROZAC TAKES ABOUT 6 WEEKS TO GET IN YOUR HEAD (system)
I was doing fine on it for 2 weeks and now, I just want the meds out of me and I am panicking more than I did before the meds. I can't give this 2 more weeks, unfortunately because I'm scared now.
