I have drunk mostly organic red wine every evening for more than 20 years, but feel pretty awful drinking it since I began taking 5-HTP @ 50-100 mg per day. Note that my dose is part of a nutritional formulation that includes GABA, Passion flower and linden flowers. I also take a purple mushroom medley, plus cat's claw with maitake and inositol. Cutting back and n the wine would be good, as I feel agitated sometimes and very foggy, if I drink within the 5 hour period recommended to wait before touching alcohol. 5-HTP is used to wean alcoholics off the beverages, so I must be creating issues for myself by drinking at all.
Does anyone drink alcohol while taking 5-HTP?

Hi Portend (hope I got that right),
If you're trying to stop drinking and the mix you're taking isn't working than maybe your alcohol problem needs a fresh looking at. I'm not saying rehab but it might help. Sounds like you already know the answer. I would drink very very little until I can stop altogether. Your life will be improved I think. Good luck~
Portend: Natural supplements should not be combined with prescription drugs, or with alcohol. You should have a discussion with your doctor about what you are taking and the side effects you are having. Just because something is referred to as "natural" doesn't automatically make it safe for someone to take. I used to take megadoses of "natural supplements", which cost me megabucks, but did not make me one bit healthier. You need guidance when taking medications, whether they are OTC or prescription, and as well as any of the natural supplements. Let me give you an example: I was taking biotin to help with hair growth. I happened to be allergic and developed a serious face rash from it and had to get a prescription from my dermatologist to treat it. Please be careful of what you take in to your body , "natural" or otherwise. There can be consequences.
Hi Portend-
You are on many herbal meds. No one really knows the reactions, short of long term of the mix you are taking. If the 5-htp is the last one you added and it is causing you symptoms when you drink, then maybe stop taking it and see how you feel or stop drinking as you said. 5-htp can be energizing to some, so it may cause anxiety.
Hope it all works out for you.
