My husband was taking Bus-par for his anxiety and it seemed to be helping but he stopped taking it because it was giving him terrible insomnia. He was only taking it for about a week when it started to help and I think if not for him stopping it because of the insomnia it might have really helped him. Has anyone else had this side effect? Can he ask his Doctor for some kind of sleeping aid to take with it? Thanks for reading!
Has anyone had to deal with insomnia from taking Buspar?

Hi 2176980: I have had problems with my sleep occasionally from Buspar.
My doctor prescribed hydroxyzine, 1 or 2 tablets to be taken at bedtime (10 mg tablets), and I sleep like a log, with no morning grogginess!
I only take it as needed. It is a prescription med though, so you might want to discuss this with your doctor.
miracle taking it now only in the morning. finally slept!!! so, i will continue to take 7.5 dose about 7 am so it wears off by evening. had a bad car accident and anxiety is over the top. so far, so good.
Great news! So glad it is working out for you. To clarify my last comment, I meant that I only take hydroxyzine as needed. I take buspar regularly, although my answer might have sounded like I only take buspar as needed. Sorry for the confusion on my part. Good luck to you. I took buspar successfully for over three years.
YES!! just talked with the Drs office because i have only taken this two days and can’t sleep. told me to only take a morning dose. so tonight, nothing!! praying that helps cause it’s supposed to be a really great anxiety drug good luck

Hi. I was just prescribing BuSpar a few days ago. It has me up all night. Trying desperately to fall asleep. It's a shame because I already feel some of its benefits. But I can not take another night like this.
I have had terrible, debilitating panic attacks for the last 12 years. Did the whole benzo thing by a psychiatrist that medically overdosed me. I had such a high tolerance. I had to go somewhere to be medically weaned. Be aware of benzos. They can become habit forming in 4 weeks and they create a vicious cycle of panic and anxiety after the initial calm wears off or your tolerance gets too high. I am prescribed a low dose of valium PRN but that is nothing compared to the 26 mg of benzos I was on several years ago. I am now on lexapro and buspar. I have not had a panic attack since being on this medication. Recently my Dr increased my buspar from 15 mg a day to 30 and I have have only been sleeping 3 hours a night. I suspected that this will pass as my body adjust. I have found lexapro and buspar to be an excellent combination for anxiety and panic attacks.
Yes, I only took it two days and the insomnia was intolerable. First day I took 1 X 10mg tab in the am, and that night literally got less than 3 hours sleep. The second day, again took the tab early morning, and the second night I literally did not fall asleep at all. Stayed awake in bed, tried going for a walk, then drinking hot tea and taking a shower. It hit me something fierce. Day 3 I stopped, and that night I got a little sleep, by the 4th day (2nd day off taking them) my sleeping was back to normal. I'd prefer to not be on Xanax because of its addictive properties, but I can't do the job I work for without decent sleep.
Yes, I have had severe insomnia with Buspar. It has helped some with depression/anxiety but my sleep pattern is just horrible. I can normally get to sleep but I wake up constantly and will be up for hours when I do. And I also have very strange dreams since I started taking it. I tend to have seasonal affective disorder so I plan on getting off of it in about a month.
I Have taken BuSpar for about a week or so and now I wake up in the middle of the night and can't fall back asleep and i always wake up around 3 am
I just started this medication also and have very horrible insomnia more than usual. (I say that because I have menopausal insomnia. But most of the time I take two 25mg Over the counter sleep aides and that usually does the trick). but this Buspirone is horrible. I get maybe 2-3 hours sleep a night. I hate nights.
Usually I am a sound sleeper (touch wood) Yesterday night I took Busprion for the 1st time and couldn't sleep a wink.
yes. buspar starts working the 1st day as well as insomnia starts the 1st day even though i take it 1st thing in morning. usually i yawn at 9:20pm and go to bed by 10:30 and fall asleep. with buspar i dont ever yawn in evening and never feel tired. when i go to bed around midnight i lay in bed til 2 am. i stopped the buspar and regular sleep returned, but so did my depression. so i restarted the buspar at 1/4 does ( 2.5 mg) and the insomnia again resumed on the 1st day. so i guess i cant take it. sucks! all antidepressants dont work. their side effects negate any good. im sure robin williams had excellent drs and if they couldnt cure his depression obviously nothing works.
Yes. I had to stop taking it.
I posted on this board nearly a year ago about my husband having sleeping issues while taking Buspar for his anxiety ... Decided to do an update on this because we found something that worked for him that might possibly help others ... It was crazy he tried many drugs and nothing helped always gave him other problems while not really helping the anxiety attacks. I got scared because he started mixing the drugs himself ... I researched online and came across a board boasting about HTP5 a natural mood enhancer ... Most of the people that tried it had almost immediate and fabulous results ... One after the other the reviews were unreal ... so I went out and purchased a bottle and talked him into trying it ... He balked and wanted his drugs ... but I held out and wouldn't give them to him ... after I'd say about a week ... he stopped asking for the drugs ... and actually started feeling better ... Now don't get me wrong its not like a miracle pill ...
he's not cured but he can deal with it now with the help of HTP5 ... The plus is he takes it once a day now at night and it helps him sleep ... a better deeper calmer sleep than he got with all those potent and dangerous drugs he was taking ... May not work for everyone but I think its something worth a try ... He was having anxiety / panic attacks ... insomnia ... just horrible ... and now he deals with it ... because the HTP5 which is all natural takes the edge off of it for him ... So anyway just wanted to post this in case it might help someone else ...
Hi, Buspar causes insomnia with some people. And it is bad. Like you know and what yyou have heard. If you want to try a non benzo med ask your doctor for Trazodone. A low dose. Like 25mg to 50mg is a good way to to get some sleep. Honestly try it. If it doesn't work then go to the benzos. I've taken 50mg for 3 months and it knocks me out after a half hour. And I have tried it all. Just a suggestion. Good luck to you all, and get some sleep! Taylor
Yes ..kind off long story..my moms doc put all his patients on buspar..seemed to help my mom..asked family doc for it and he gave me10mg twice a day..shrink said it only worked if you took 60mg a day..been taking 22.5 mg twice a day..cannot sleep! Took second 50mg of trazodone Going to ask him th reduce it to in the morning only
If you google " can I take Trazodone with Buspar -- You will get the answer NO- they both increase serotonin - and you can get serotonin syndrome using both.. so be careful there
Hello, I am also on Buspar for anxiety and here I thought the awful awful insomnia I am suffering from was from anxiety alone. I won't sleep at all for 3 to 8 days. When I say not all I truly mean not at all. Occasionally I have Ambien (regular not CR) 10mg and when I take those I will sleep 3 or 4 hours maximum wake up in a panic and have to take one more to be able to back to sleep for a couple more hours. The last time I took an Ambien it did not work at all, I was wide awake so I had To take 2 more then I only slept lightly. Called my doc in a manic type state and he immediately called in an Ativan script to take 1mg tablets as needed for extreme anxiety. Well that's my story, and I am going to taper buspar and get off ASAP. Good luck Also if he wants to continue Buspar suggest Ambien CR maybe it did'nt help me because it was'nt CR version.
Beware though because Ambien tolerance builds up very quickly, you can read lots of personal posts on this subject online. I am certainly not the only one that a single 10mg tablet just stopped working some people need upwards of 5 a night to sleep. So do your research. -K
Kittycatgirl2 I thought I was the only person that this would happen to! I desperately hate when night time comes because I am terrified that I am going to lay in bed and not fall asleep. If I lay in bed without sleeping it triggers horrendous panic attacks for me. I will take an Ativan (my dr prescribed it for the same reason yours did) and it will knock me out but I will wake up hysterically anxious again. I hate this horrible roller coaster that I'm on. How are you doing now? Did weaning off the buspar help with your insomnia? Thanks
Buspar can be taken with melatonin. In fact it was discovered that the two together form a synergy that turns the combo into a great antidepressant. Research it. Low dose Buspar, no more than 15 mg with 4 mg melatonin. The melatonin takes the edge of the insomnia. Be careful of the dose.
