Hi, I have been diagnosed with a urinary infection whilst 24 weeks pregnant. The GP prescribed one 500mg capsule of Amoxicillin 3 times daily. I'm sure he would not have given me Amoxicillin if not safe during pregnancy, however I am a bit concerned about the high dosage. Appreciated if anyone could comment on this or has had any experience with Amoxicillin. Many thanks!

Amoxicillin has been assigned to pregnancy category B by the FDA.
Animal studies using 10 times the human dose have failed to reveal any evidence of teratogenicity (no effect on growth or development of baby). Although no controlled data in human pregnancy are available, literature reports of adverse fetal effects are lacking.
Amoxicillin is only recommended during pregnancy when benefit outweighs risk.

The risk is low compared to leaving a urinary tract infection untreated during pregnancy.
The dose of amoxicillin your doctor has prescribed is not high.
Very good antibiotics for std
ok amoxicillin from the best antibiotics used for pregnancy...
but dont use amoxicillin + clavullinic acid cause it may lead to bleeding and danger status...
so use it alone three times daily
Man thanks both - feel a lot better now!
