Is this true? Could I get the same benefits from a lower dose with maybe less side effects? I take it for my BP, which isn't all that bad. I have noticed my hair thinning and I read that this could be a side effect of this med. Any thoughts on this?
I take 25 mg. hydrochlorothiazide. I have read that only taking half a pill may be as effective?

G, you should only talk half the amount of hydrochorathiazide if that is what is prescribed, otherwise you will not reap the benefit you are seeking. Thinning hair is not a side effect; however, it could be the side effect of other diseases or medications. What else do you take, or what else do you have? StarGlittr
I was prescribed 25 mg. I have read that HCTZ can cause hair loss or thinning hair, and I have read this also in user reviews. I was hoping that half the dose might curb this particular side effect. I also take wellbutrin and buspirone.
If the hydrochlor is working for you, try researching what you might take to help hair growth if that is a concern. When I was in my 30's I was taking Centrum Silver and it helped immensely! I have never taken Wellbutrin, but I did take Buspar (buspirone) for a while until the side effects got to be too much. StarGlitter
StarGlitter, do you mind telling me what kind of side effects you had with buspirone that you couldn't tolerate?
OMG, let me look at my notes. I was dizzy and very depressed. I could not concentrate or think clearly and couldn't hardly work. I was very tired. I had a stiff neck from day 1 and a headache. I was easily agitated. Then the dizziness hit again with super bad heart palpitations. I took the medicine for almost 3 weeks, and then had to quit. I was taking it to control my motor tics from Tourette's. It worked for the problem, and I was on the minimum dose only 1x a day.
It's frustrating that one pill can cause so many problems. I'm so sorry you had all that trouble. Were you taking a high dose?
My dose had to be lowered because I was getting dizzy and nauseated. But I'm ok now. Hope you're feeling better.
Lowest dose, and 1 time a day.
Hi G mc: If you take half a pill, you are only receiving 1/2 of the maximum benefit of the
medication. Hair thinning is not a side effect of this particular drug. You may want ask your physician about that problem. What you are taking is a water pill that removes excess water from your body, or for maybe another problem. Please do not deviate your medication from what the doctor has ordered UNLESS the doctor does so himself. This could be dangerous for you.
