Xolair is used to treat types of allergic asthma, nasal polyps, chronic hives, and to reduce the risk of severe food-related allergic reactions. It should not be used for asthma attacks or the emergency treatment of allergic reactions. It was first approved by the FDA in 2003.

This medication is an anti-IgE antibody. It works by blocking the binding of IgE to receptors on cells, which in turn stops the release of the chemicals responsible for allergy symptoms.

Xolair is given as an injection under the skin every 2 to 4 weeks, depending on the condition. The first dose should be given under the supervision of a healthcare provider in case of a life-threatening allergic reaction.

Common Xolair side effects include joint pain, tiredness, bone fractures, stomach pain, dizziness, itching, skin rash, headache, earache, and injection site reactions. Side effects vary depending on the condition being treated and the age group of the patient.
