Side effects include:
Possible hypervitaminosis D effects: polyuria, nocturia, polydipsia, hypercalciuria, reversible azotemia, hypertension, nephrocalcinosis, generalized vascular calcification, irreversible renal insufficiency (may be fatal), mental retardation, widespread soft tissue calcification, osteoporosis, dwarfism, vague aches, stiffness, weakness, nausea, anorexia, constipation, mild acidosis, anemia, weight loss.
For Healthcare Professionals
Applies to ergocalciferol: compounding powder, injectable solution, oral capsule, oral solution, oral tablet
Metabolic side effects have included hypercalcemia.[Ref]
Hypercalciuria may precede hypercalcemia in patients being treated with ergocalciferol. Early signs and symptoms of hypercalcemia include headache, anorexia, nausea, vomiting, gastrointestinal disturbances, abdominal cramps, dry mouth, metallic taste, weakness, fatigue, muscle and bone pain, ataxia, tinnitus, and vertigo. Later stages of hypercalcemia may present as pruritus, mental confusion, hypertension, cardiac arrhythmias, seizures, metastatic calcification, and renal insufficiency (manifested as polyuria, nocturia, polydipsia, and proteinuria).[Ref]
