Taking linaclotide with food may increase gastrointestinal side effects such as diarrhea, abdominal pain, and gas. The absorption of any other oral medication you may take can be affected if you develop frequent or severe diarrhea. To reduce the risk of gastrointestinal intolerance, linaclotide should be taken on an empty stomach at least 30 minutes prior to the first meal of the day.
