"Polycythemia Rubra Vera for over 8 years. Had high red cells, high platelets, low iron. Started on aspirin daily and fortnightly phlebotomy, did this for a number of years - while slowly extending the timeframe out for phlebotomy. This helped slowly reduce red cell count but kept increasing platelets. Started on peginterferon alfa-2a over 4 years ago. Had weekly injections to start with - over the course of the last couple of years, we've slowly dropped the dose and extended the dosage to monthly. Side effect - on the initial injection, I had extreme pain (which was predicted by the doctor), everything hurt - muscles, nerves, full body pain. I have been very lucky, however, because after the very first injection I've had not a single side effect, no pain, nothing. Still have aspirin daily, platelet count is now within normal range. Still iron deficient, red cell count not quite in normal range but close. Have now started on low dose iron every second day."
