Sorry that should have been Ranitidine

Hives is an itchy rash that can appear like welts, anywhere on the body. The itchy skin rash is caused by histamine release and can be be treated with drugs called antihistamines.
Most antihistamines, such as hydroxyzine (Atarax) and diphenhydramine (Benadryl), are H1 histamine receptor antagonists. That means they target one of the four types of histamine receptors in the body, called H1 receptors, and block their production of histamine. H1 receptors are located throughout the body in our smooth muscles and in the cells that make up the lining of our blood and lymphatic vessels.
A much smaller percent of antihistamines are histamine H2 receptor antagonists, which means they block H2 histamine receptors from producing histamine. H2 receptors are found in gastrointestinal parietal cells (the stomach cells that produce gastric acid). Medications used to treat heartburn, including ranitidine (Zantac) and cimetidine (Tagamet), are also used as H2-blocking antihistamines.
H2 receptor blockers are used in more resistant cases of hives.
NO! #1. It's recently been recalled and taken off store shelves. But it was always an antacid and acid reflux medicine.
I'm almost afraid to say it, because it's only been just 2 days, but it really worked for me. Not sure why I had a bad relapse last month after MANY years, my allergies mostly environmental, but I read about the ranitidine Sunday a.m. & paired it up with generic Allegra, which was new for me. But I've been doing generic claritin & generic zyrtec with not much luck. I ran to walmart & bought the 2 & things cleared up! The hives are fading & my symptoms are not too bad!
I probably didnt need a new antihistamine, just the ranitidine, & could've continued my usual antihistamine routine, but I was itchy & desperate! It HAS to be the ranitidine. Try it!
I’ve had huge hives since yesterday morning. Primary doctor put me on low doses of Claritin Benadryl and Zantac.
Went to the ER as no relief after 12 hours. Dr there recommended adding steroid and gave me some in the room. Today saw the allergist who changed the cocktail to Claritin and Zantac up to 4 times a day plus steroid. Took them at 2:35pm and still itchy as all heck. I’m afraid Of the anaphylactic breathing issue but all doctors say it would have already happened. When will I feel relief?! The only time I did was taking Benadryl 50mg, One Zantac 150mg and one Claritin 12 hour. That would give me about 4 hours of relief. Now that I’m off the Benadryl (at least til bedtime) I’m suffering. Help!
Ranitidine is not a simple antacid. It's a histamine blocker (H2 blocker), and it reduces your risk of getting a boatload of histamine all at one time from your gut. Histamine is the main substance your body produces that causes allergic reactions.
If you've ever had a severe allergic reaction, you may notice it's one of the first drugs they give you in the ER. Many people with severe allergies swear by it, and it's kept a lot of people out of the ER.
My daughter was recently prescribed both the Zyrtec and ranitidine for hives and due to her severe anxiety the hives are most likely due to stress or anxiety. So I agree with many posts here and it's been working well so far!
yes Zantac will work for hives, our son has a sever allergy to Cashews and a few mo.ago we had to take him to the ER and they gave him Benadryl and another drug in a IV and the Doctor told us it was the same active indgredint as Zantac.he then told us the next time to try giving him 300 mg of Zantac and a double dose of the Benadryl if he broke out in hives again.then he gave us a prescription for 2 epi pens and told our son to stay away from the cashews,he can eat peanuts and tree nuts ,only cashews make him sick.
I've had severe itching for about 13 years. The only thing I've found that works for me is Xyzal (cleaned up version of Zyrtec) and 150mg/day of Zantac. I'm prescribed 150me/twice daily but only need to take it once in the evening.
I used to take Zyrtec but it makes my Restless Leg Syndrome incredibly bad. The Xyzal doesn't cause that issue.
In 13 years I've tried just about everything there is to try to relieve itching. I have scars up and down my arms and legs from scratching. Think of Poison Ivy x 10. That kind of itch. This combo works for me. And no drowsiness.
I have been diagnosed with chronic hives and I'm seeing an allergist/immunologist. I have been prescribed Zyrtec and Ranitidine (300 mg) to help control them. Then Ranitidine is an antacid but also an H-2 histamine blocker. It is not unusual to have these two antihistamines prescribed together. In fact, several years ago I had an allergic reaction (facial swelling) to a medication and was told to take Benadryl and Zantac. So, this it not out of the norm.
I honestly don't know either about th ranitidine. Take for day r 2 no results ask for something else I imagine he thinks stess is causing them I'm not sure. But id like to make a suggestion that may help goto the store get aveno oatmeal bath soak in it at least once a day you could even 2or3 (if you have time] it will draw the hives out and purify your skin from the hives don't use soap you'll already be clean from it. Its nt very expaensive and it also relieves stress to take a nice soak evey once in awhile if its cause by stress as well. They also make it in a lotion to but it won't draw it out like the bath but does relieve dryness of the skin and stop it from feeling raw. The bath works on hives, chicken px,measles, insect bites ect. Iuse it for my kids and myself. When my daughter had the chicken pox she only got 3 pox on her skin cause I bathed her in it no calamine was even needed. It is a great relief I hope it helps good luck let us know how you are. Jaime}litlmommag
Ummmmmmm. No comment about what the doctor said. Ranitidine MAY HELP but I'm not convinced. You could try it and see ... it won't do any harm. I myself would have suggested that you take the older sedating antihistamines such as diphenhydramine, etc. I think they work better for severe itching/rashes.
I had a bad case of hives that lasted for 4 weeks I went to 4 doctors no results fiannialy went to a dermatologist he prescribed 600mg.of zantact a day my hives went away in one day this was a miracle..
I went through 6 weeks of intense hives. I tried everything, both OTC & prescription. Nothing worked. It was extreme itching and no relief.
After a night of non stop scratching, I ended up at a Walgreen's about 2 am. The pharmacist was very nice and told me to use zantac and Benadryl. I was sceptical but also willing to try anything. After taking both meds, within a half hour, itching was gone. After 1 hour, hives were gone! I now take in morning and evening and have had no more hives. YES, it works!
Yes .. diphenhydramine (Benadryl) does work for itchiness but is also used as a sleep aid. So the antacid is the better choice for during the day.
zantac, hives, pruritus, antacid
