I have been on 20mg of Prozac for 3 weeks. I’m having bad effects such as shaking and feeling sick. I’ve asked my Dr to taper me off it but am unable to receive a response. The NP said to go down now to 10mg and I don’t know if this is safe. Thank you for any assistance.
What is the proper taper for Prozac?

Hi, emcs!
I'm sorry you're having these side effects! 20mg may be too much for your metabolism yet. It's pretty standard to drop to a lower dose temporarily to see if you tolerate it better. You may find it effective at the lower dose or you may need to increase it again in the future.
Great that you're looking for advice rather doing something like trying to do it yourself or worse stopping abruptly. I'd say give it a shot as the NP advised.
Best wishes, Wildcat
Give us an update if you don't mind.
Thank you, Wildcat. I now realize that all I have are 20mg capsules which prevent me from lowering the dose. Now, I’m lost as I’ll never reach the Dr for a new RX. I’m wondering if you can just stop it on your own…not asking for medical advice just thoughts. Thank you, again.
I'm sorry I didn't see this sooner. I suppose about all you can do is maybe try taking it every other day and hopefully hear from your doctor. After a week or so try going every second day. Maybe it's not ideal but has to be better than feeling so sick.
Keep trying with the doctor. Eventually you're going to run out of your current supply and decisions need to be made about your treatment plan You also have the right to participate in those decisions.
My best wishes to you and I hope you're feeling better soon. Keep in touch if you will.

Today, new medication…I was not put on a taper for Prozac. In addition to it, I was prescribed Caplyta, 10.5mg at bedtime. I tried this med once before, for 1 night and it made me beyond sleepy so I’m apprehensive trying it again. I appreciate any thoughts..this is with 20mg Prozac, 200mg/day Lamictal, 1200 gabapentin daily for another problem, 2.5mg/day Klonopin, 30mg Buspar, & blood pressure meds. Unfortunately,I was more recently diagnosed with COPD, the Caplyta causes me some fear of not waking up if I need a breathing treatment. That’s my latest and welcome your thoughts! Thank you.
Hopefully this will post below your last entry... lately I haven't always been able to comment on a comment.
Unfortunately, I'm not very familiar with it except that it can cause heavy sedation in some people as you now know. I think the 10.5 is the lowest dose... do you remember what you took last time? It should should wear off as you adjust but like you said, that won't help in the middle of the night if you're zoned out. Did the same doctor diagnose the COPD and prescribe the medication?
I'm just not much help on this one. I've never been on it because I've taken Vraylar for years and it works for me.
The cost of these drugs is prohibitive and I'm lucky that my doctors have always been able to supply me with samples.
So good luck and keep in touch, okay?

News…today, I was put back on Rexulti .25mg and kept on the 20mg Prozac, Dr. isn’t taking me off the Prozac. This in addition to the meds I’ve previously listed is my new medication.
I’m not even sure Rexulti interacts with Prozac and received a noncommittal answer when I questioned it..apparently I insulted him. I don’t know and appreciate any thoughts. This is horrible to go through! Thank you.
I didn’t mention again that I have COPD.
I see masso has given you the information about the potential interaction. It seems enough that the doctor should have informed you of the possibility and what to watch for.
This flipflopping around with your medications must be so frustrating! I would say I can't imagine but I can. I went through the same trial and error for some time before we hit on the best possible combination of meds. If it's any encouragement the end result has been well worth all the effort.
Good luck with this. Keep us posted. okay?

Hi,
I was on Prozac (fluoxetine) a long time ago, so you know I am familiar with this AD.
I am not a Dr., and everyone reacts differently to everything in life, having said that, cutting it by half in my opinion is too much, too fast, I suggest until you talk to your prescriber you go down to 15mgs..
Best of luck, masso
Masso, thank you very much. I apologize but I didn’t see your reply until know and appreciate it and your suggestion. Today, things were changed again, which I’ll try to post and hope for some thoughts.
Hi,
It's ok, no need to apologize, you getting better is the objective.
Last century in the early 90´s I took prozac and they came in solid pills, they could be split/cut, but if you are taking capsules, nothing you can do, as I said no apologies needed, thank you for taking the time to thank me, well you, you are welcome... whatever you do get a Dr. who cares about you and truly helps you, I am 56 and theses days things are very different from when I first started 28 years ago my conditions and meds journey, specially Drs..
Get well soon, masso
Hello Masso, I posted above about my latest news. You may have some thoughts as well.
Hi,
There is a potential major interaction with Prozac and Rexulti, major meaning:
Major Highly clinically significant. Avoid combinations; the risk of the interaction outweighs the benefit.
And 2 potential moderate interactions Drug and food interactions mainly with alcohol.

I suggest you get back to your Dr. with the potential major drug to drug interaction, do not be nervous with your sensitive Dr., he is responsible for your treatment and above all your safety.
Good hearing from you and let us know how it goes.
Best of luck, masso
Thank you very much, Masso. I actually looked up the 2 drugs and found the interaction, I do appreciate your highlighting it however. Today I was able to reach a Dr covering for mine who assured me the combo was safe! I told him what I had found which was dismissed as only being applicable in certain cases. I then called 2 pharmacies, spoke with the pharmacists, one being where I get all my meds. Both said the combination was safe & many people take the 2. So, once again I’m lost. My anxiety is so bad from this I can’t describe it. Perhaps you or WCV have some direction to help. Thanks again, your input is greatly helpful and appreciated.
Hi,
Do not get anxious that will only make things worse for you.
I take 4 different medications and all have potential major interactions and for a period of 10 years, nothing has happened to me.
Give it a try and if you do not feel well stop and inform your Dr..
All the best, masso
