I wondered if this affected the kidneys somehow as I try to drink a lot of fluids when on prednisone but don't have the urge to urinate and my legs triple in size until the skin is breaking
What causes water retention and not able to urinate causing swelling?

Are you saying you feel like you have to urinate but can't go, or are you not producing urine in the first place and putting it in your legs instead? Why are you on the prednisone? Prednisone causes some fluid retention, but what you're discussing isn't every day run of the mill water retention. Have you had any kidney function tests done?
No, I'm saying I don't feel like I have to urinate. I keep my legs elevated as much as possible. The reason Dr put me on prednisone is I had the flu and I have COPD and it helps my lungs. Yes my kidney functions have been tested extensively recently and everything is fine.
My neighbor is not on Prednisone... but she has COPD. She had the same problem with her legs. She wore compression stockings to take down the swelling. That didn't help so now she is on water pills. That has corrected the swelling in her legs. I think that it is a possibility that prednisone is not the problem.
I cannot believe the neighbor response I received. I realize there are many reasons for swelling such as heart condition. My legs swelled ONLY the few times I was put on prednisone after a few weeks of getting off this drug they were back to normal and stayed that way. I was just curious what happens to body functions that causes this reaction when taken. By this response I feel I am talking to a 12 year old, not a professional. I am very disappointed in this site.
I am sorry... Please don't judge my comment on this site.
What a delightful individual you are Celeste, all class. A better question = a better response. You are disappointed by people who volunteer their time to offer an opinion (home page). I guess you try not to do anything for anyone other than your good self. What right do you have to criticize people trying to help you for free?
I'm sorry but on this web site I thought I was talking to professionals for help not individuals who happened to read my problems
