I was on Celexa for 5 wks & I gained 14.7 lbs so ystrdy my dr gave me a sample back for Viibryd. After reading some comments I'm quite worried about weight gain! I have a rare thyroid disease & my weight changes every 3 yrs (seriously). I lost about 90lbs since Dec 2009 & really need to take off that 15lbs. Don't need/want any weight gain!
Does Viibryd really cause weight gain? I?

I have taken Viibryd for about 6 months and have gained 20lbs. My prescriber is having me get blood work for my thyroid but I am young & healthy and have never been this heavy in my life. The only difference has not been my eating, exercise, etc., but the Viibryd, so I am positive it is the culprit. My advice for fear of weight gain is to not take Viibryd, because it not only has made me go from a size 2 to a size 6 in 6 months, but the weight gain has taken a toll on my mental health. I am getting off the Viibryd now but I will have to now take more measures to lose weight that I should not have even gained in the first place. Hopefully you can find a medicine that works for you! I heard Wellbutrin does not cause weight gain but it’s more for depression than anxiety (if you’re more focused on anxiety). I hope this helps!
Unfortunately, although one or two antidepressants are considered more "weight neutral" most, if not all, psychotropic medications can potentially cause weight gain in a few users.
If the gain is not excessive and the medication is effective for you you may have to bite the bullet and wear a couple size larger jeans.
Personally, despite a few pounds I'm happier and healthier than I've ever been in my life.
"Metabolic
Common (1% to 10%): Increased appetite, increased weight"
Yes, in a small percentage of users. This is true of almost every antidepressant and psychotropic medication, but remember that the percentage is very small.
Regards,
I have been on Viibryd (40mg) for two years. During this time I have gained almost 20 pounds. I attributed this to poor eating habits. Finally hitting a wall with the weight gain I joined a weight loss program which I know works. I started the rapid weight loss program (1200 calories a day) along with exercise and in the first four days I lost almost 6 pounds. However at the same time I had forgotten to take my Viibryd for the first three days only realizing this when I suffered the side effects from stopping the drug abruptly. I restarted immediately and experienced a two pound weight gain on the weight loss program in two days! I'm at a loss for how to handle this!
Hi Dee,
Viibryd has become a popular anti-depressant as it did not contribute to remarkable weight gain in clinical trials. Eating patterns during depression do cause weight gain, as we know. I myself have lost around 11 pounds on Viibryd so I advise you to talk to your Dr. If you're actually feeling better, try to hang in there. The side effects will resolve and I suspect you will not experience weight gain. I have found this to be a remarkable drug-give it a chance for a few months. Please let us know how you're doing and feel free to PM be if you like.

I have been on Viibryd for over a year. I have gained 40 lbs! I am 5' 3" with a small frame and feel ok in the 135lb range but haven't been close to that in a year. Since starting this Rx, I have gained gradually and cannot take the weight off! I work out 4-5x a week and watch everything I eat. I also have celiac, which makes dieting difficult so I have to monitor everything I eat. I cannot LOSE weight. My dr said weight gain wasn't a side effect, but I think he's wrong! I think I am more depressed being so overweight than I was before the meds! So glad I found this board & I'm not imagining things. Time to find a new med!!
I am on Viibryd for a month and a week and I gained 18lbs. I noticed I have been careful what I eat.
Oh my gosh, you've got to be kidding!!! I feel so bloated right now from the 15 lbs I gained from Celexa! Maybe I'll call my dr & let him know. I certainly/definitely do NOT want to gain anymore weight! Thanks for your comment!
I have "just" started taking Vii and I feel so bloated. My stomach looks bloated. I feel bloated. I just weighed myself and I've gained 3 pounds. Note, I said I just started taking it! Hitting the gym tomorrow!
I think it is the best to work it out. I stopped drinking soda, juice. I am a sugar freak and stop eating candy and junk food. It is hard but gaining weight is no fun.
I have been taking Viibryd for six month and I too have experience weight gain despite Viibryd claims that it does not cause weight gain. I am currently being monitored monthly by my doctor. I go for monthly weight and blood pressure check ups. My doctor can verify that since starting Viibryd I have gained 20 pounds. I am currently prepping for an upcoming surgery. I have cut many foods and drinks out of my diet. I currently drink only water and green tea. I excerise daily. There is no reason for this weight gain. Viibryd is the only medication that I am currently taking and as I mentioned, it can be proven that my weight has increased significantly since starting Viibryd. I am 40 years old and my weight had been stable prior to starting Viibryd. I have also been experiencing very vivid dreams and nightmares since starting Viibryd. And, unfortunately, I am one of the rare few who have experience sexual side effects on this drug. On the positive side, Viibryd is working for me.
My doctor and I are continuing to monitor these side effects.
